Koga Kano

(1896-1953)

   There is a vacant seat at the daily Communion Services this Lent in All Saints Chapel of St. Paul's University ― the seat usually occupied by Mr. Koga Kano who for many years past was accustomed to attending service on each of the 40 days of Lent. Nor was Lent the only time he came; until he was bed-ridden he came to worship at least two or three times weekly. Yes, the Church lost one of its most faithful servants when Mr. Kano dies at his home in Tokyo on December 13, 1953, after several painful months of suffering from cancer of the lung.

   The Church also lost one of its best known artists, for Koga Kano was nationally known for his paintings in Japanese style. He was the last representative of a long family of scholar-artists, his father and grandfather having been equally well-known in Japan. In fact, Mr. Kano's grandfather acquired a modest international reputation, having at one time been a protégé of E. F. Fenollosa, a pioneer collector and critic of Japanese art, who included some of Mr. Kano's work in his books on Far Eastern art.

   A man who made his living by his art, Mr. Kano perhaps gave away more paintings than he sold, works which now his friends treasure in their tokonoma. JAPAN MISSIONS was the recipient of one such gift, the Christmas scene which appeared on the cover of the Winter 1953 issue.

狩野光雅

　今年の大斎節の間、立教学院諸聖徒礼拝堂で毎日行われている聖餐式には、一つの空席がある。それは、長年にわたり大斎節の40日間すべての礼拝に欠かさず出席していた狩野光雅氏が、いつも座っていた席である。氏が礼拝に通ったのは大斎節だけではなかった。病床に伏すようになるまで、少なくとも週に二、三度は礼拝に出席していたのである。1953年12月13日、肺癌による数か月に及ぶ苦しい闘病の末、東京の自宅で狩野氏が逝去されたとき、教会は実に最も忠実な奉仕者の一人を失ったのであった。

　同時に教会は、最もよく知られた芸術家の一人を失ったのである。狩野光雅氏は日本画家として全国的に知られていたからである。彼は代々続く画家の家系の最後の代表者であり、父も祖父もまた、日本では同様に著名であった。実際、狩野氏の祖父は、極東美術の先駆的な収集家・批評家であったE・F・フェノロサの庇護を受けたこともあり、国際的にもささやかな名声を得ていた。フェノロサは、極東美術に関する自身の著作の中に、狩野氏の作品をいくつか取り上げている。

　芸術によって生計を立てていた狩野氏であったが、売った絵よりも人に譲った絵の方が多かったのではないかと思われる。それらの作品は、今も友人たちの家の床の間で大切にされている。『JAPAN MISSIONS』も、そうした贈り物の一つを受け取った。1953年冬号の表紙を飾ったクリスマスの情景の絵がそれである。
