Global Fellowship
This workshop day offers postgraduate students and academic researchers practical, scholar-focused training in methods for language environment analysis and speech classification. The morning session introduces the LENA system through Jongmin Jung’s detailed overview of long-form audio recording and its research applications, followed by Jun Ho Chai’s step-by-step demonstration of data analysis using LENA-generated files. In the afternoon, Suk Hwan Jeong presents advanced, AI-assisted tools for annotating and validating speech with focus on the task of ADS vs. CDS classification. Ioana Buhnila will introduce tools “Beyond LENA,” which will equip researchers to process long-forms speech data without LENA device or algorithms. Participants will engage in theme-based small group discussions to exchange expertise, tackle methodological challenges, and build scholarly collaborations across disciplines. This session is ideal for those eager to acquire actionable skills and join a vibrant, international research community dedicated to innovative practices in language and speech analysis.

HK (Humanities Korea) is a national initiative supporting long-term, interdisciplinary research in the humanities. This workshop contributes to that mission by fostering dialogue on language and cognition across the lifespan, with a special focus on Korean contexts and data-driven methodologies. The event will consist of two days of research presentations (Days 1–2) followed by a full-day tutorial workshop (Day 3) focused on long-form recordings and their use in studying naturalistic language environments.

This hands-on workshop supports the launch of BabyView-K, offering a hands-on introduction to methods and tools for infant-centered egocentric video research. This is done by bringing together researchers from Stanford University's BabyView team and Chosun University's BabyView-K initiative. The event includes a morning scientific session highlighting recent findings on modeling infant cognition and language from egocentric data, while an afternoon session focused on practical aspects such as device setup, data management, ethical considerations, and participant recruitment. The workshop aimed at fostering collaboration, establishing data standards, as well as promoting interoperability among participants. It is highly relevant for developmental scientists, computational modelers, and researchers interested in early cognitive and linguistic development through real-world data.

Building on the success of the 2023 conference on music research collaboratively organized by POSTECH MINDS, Chosun CDS, and KIAS, the 2024 joint workshop by POSTECH MINDS and Chosun CDS broadens its focus to foster meaningful dialogue and collaboration between the humanities and sciences. This interdisciplinary platform encourages participants to exchange ideas, share methodologies, and explore collaborative opportunities. Rather than focusing on narrow topics, the workshop promotes open-ended discussions that inspire innovation and cross-disciplinary connections. The goal is to create a dynamic environment for creative thinking and partnerships that advance both research and practical applications.

Our institute has been offering a tutorial series titled "Language Acquisition through the Lens of Data" since 2023. These sessions focus on analyzing and understanding language acquisition data and have, until now, been exclusively conducted online. This summer, we will host a Hybrid Workshop with both in-person and online participation options, aiming to provide a more interactive and immersive learning experience. Day 1: Statistical Workshop using R The first day will feature a statistical workshop using R, including research presentations related to child development data. Following an introduction to the data through the latest research from Professor Eon-Suk Ko's team, the tutorial will provide a detailed statistical analysis of the data used in the presented study. This is designed to help participants acquire the skills to apply similar techniques to their own research. Day 2: Research Workshop on Language Acquisition The second day will host a research workshop on language acquisition. The morning will feature a thematic session on infant eye-tracking centered on Peekbank. This session will include presentations by the developers of the Peekbank database, along with a tutorial on how to track and analyze infant eye-tracking data using Peekbank. This will be followed by research presentations on various aspects of child language acquisition, introducing cutting-edge studies and innovative methodologies.

Background and Objectives Infants naturally acquire the meaning of words and the grammar of language with minimal data or explicit training. In contrast, while current Artificial Intelligence (AI) demonstrates remarkable performance, it often lacks the ability to autonomously learn what young children easily master. Therefore, understanding the intrinsic learning mechanisms of infants and young children holds the potential to significantly enhance AI performance. Furthermore, AI technology can contribute to a deeper understanding of these developmental learning mechanisms, making the interdisciplinary exchange highly beneficial. This workshop aims to bring together researchers in Developmental Science and AI Technology to share their knowledge and experiences, and to explore new ideas and methodologies at this intersection.

Event Description This event, held as part of a joint workshop by the KIAS Interdisciplinary Research Group for Korean Traditional Music, POSTECH MINDS, and the Institute for Data Science in Humanities at Chosun University, is a special Lecture–Recital exploring the intersection of Music, Mathematics, and Language. Blending presentations and performances, this event integrally illuminates the rhythm of human cognition, the mathematical structure of music, and the neurological basis of linguistic harmony. The recital opens with David Temperley's Preludes for Piano, followed by Kim Byeongho-Ryu's Gayageum Sanjo (Performer: Jung Jaehoon, Gayageum: Hyein Min) and a piano performance by Lee Kyungmyun. Lectures include Hyojeong Huh's Kant, the Sublime, and Musical Discourse (c. 1800). The stage will also feature Daegum player Lee Yonggu, Haegeum player Kim Jeongrim and the Haegeum Ensemble, and a special collaboration utilizing AI algorithms: Dodeuri AI Algorithm 3 Sequence 1 Scale 4 (Jung Jaehoon & Choi Youngjun). This performance is an innovative attempt to bring musical sensibility, humanistic thought, and the artistic potential of AI technology together onto a single stage.
