Most events allow you to choose your role in the Strictly Swing division.
Moreover, Strictly Swing divisions are not governed by the WSDC rule that prohibits event directors from allowing dancers to compete in both roles in the same division at the same event. Consequently, some (but not all) events allow you to compete in both roles in the Strictly Swing division, as long as you don't register in the same level for both roles. For example, an Intermediate leader can lead in the Intermediate level of a Strictly Swing division and that same Intermediate leader can also petition down and compete in the Novice level of as a follower in the same Strictly Swing division.
An event's rules for petitioning down in Strictly Swing divisions are usually (but not always) the same as the rules for petitioning down in Jack and Jills. Check out the Petitioning page to learn more about how to petition, but also be sure to check each event's rules. If the rules are not clear, don't hesitate to e-mail the event director or head judge. Or you can Contact Us.
