Most, but not all, events that have a Rising Star division allow your to choose your role. Event directors of each event dictate their own rules for Rising Star.
Some, but not all, events that have a Rising Star division also participate in the Rising Star Tour. If the event participates in the Rising Star Tour, then its Rising Star rules are governed by the Rising Star Tour Committee.
The Rising Star Tour Committee allows each individual event to determine whether its Rising Star division is role-based or gender-restricted. According to the Rising Star Tour's rules, "At the discretion of the event director(s), a couple may be other than a male leader and female follower."
