About Dr. Chie Iguchi

Chie Iguchi is Professor of International Business at the Faculty of Business and Commerce at Keio University in Tokyo, and Visiting Fellow in International Business and Strategy at Henley Business School, University of Reading. She grew up in Japan, where she graduated from Shizuoka high school, and moved to the UK, where she studied all her higher educations in International Business and Economics. She was awarded a MSc from SOAS and a MSc and PhD in International Business from University of Reading.

Before completion of her PhD, she became a lecturer at Witan International College in the UK from 1998 to 2004, then moved to Japan in 2005 to join Ritsumeikan University, Faculty of Business followed by Rikkyo University, College of Business from 2009. She joined Keio University, Faculty of Policy Management in April 2012 and was transferred to Faculty of Business and Commerce in April 2013. She was a visiting academia at Henley Business School, University of Reading as a visiting academia between August 2018 and August 2020 during her sabbatical.

She has been teaching and doing researches in the field of International Business, Global Innovation Management and Global Strategic Management. Besides her professorship at Keio University, she was a visiting professor at Thammasat Business School in Bangkok between 2008 and 2012. She also serves as Executive Secretary of Euro-Asia Management Studies Association (EAMSA) since January 2009 year for 3rd term (3 years per term), National Representative of Japan of European International Business Academy (EIBA) since April 2013 for 2nd term (3 years per term), President of the Association of Japanese Business Studies (AJBS) since July 2017(a board member from July 2013), and a board member of Academy of Multinational Enterprises since July 2013.

Her research interests include Roles of R&D in host Asian countries, Technological upgrading, Innovation activities and knowledge creation activities in host Asian countries, particularly Japanese TNC's behaviors in Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Singapore, India and Indonesia, as well as issues on headquarter and subsidiaries relationships. Every year she actively visits these Asian countries and conducts face to face interviews to TNC subsidiaries, local firms and government related division. Recently she has been involving projects in ASEAN regions with ASEAN Japan center and JMA. She hosted Sue Bruning as a visiting professor (January - April 2014), Katharina Hildisch as a JSPS visiting fellow (July - Oct 2014), Markus Kowalski as a visiting researcher (Oct -Dec 2015), Florian Kohlbacher as a visiting researcher (Dec 2015 - June 2016), Yoo Jung Ha as a visiting fellow (Apr - June 2016), and Rajneesh Narula as a JSPS visiting professor (April-May 2018) , Mario Ogasavara as a Japan foundation visiting fellow (March-September 2022), Felix Roedder as a JSPS visiting fellow (March-June 2022), Valentine Kiefner as a visiting fellow (October - December 2022) for collaborative research projects. Besides her research activities and being an active member of scholarly associations, she is a member of FCCJ(the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan), FCCJ Toastmasters Club, and the Japan-British Society in Japan.

現在、慶應義塾大学商学部教授として、研究・教育活動に従事しています。専門は国際経営戦略論、グローバルイノベーションマネジメントです。取り組んでいる研究は「多国籍企業のグローバルイノベーション戦略」です。多国籍企業本社と子会社の企業活動への視点だけでなく、多国籍企業の子会社がホスト国で研究開発活動を行うことが、多国籍企業の競争優位の源泉にどのようにつながるのか、ホスト国にいかに貢献できるのか、という点を探究しています。対象としている国はタイ、フィリピン、マレーシア、シンガポール、台湾、インド、インドネシアです。最近では、日系企業の東南アジアへのFDIとヨーロッパへのFDIを比較しようと、新しい試みで研究に取り組んでいます。主な論文や研究成果はResearchのページをご確認ください。

学部でInternational Businessとフランス語を専攻していた時に副専攻の経済学と国際経営の融合する学問を求めてロンドン大学SOASの修士課程に進学し開発経済学を専攻しました。SOASではAnne Booth教授（東南アジア経済専門）やMachiko Nissanke教授（国際経済専門）の影響を強く受けましたが、開発経済学ではなくて国際経営の道を究めようと英国レディング大学経済学研究科（専攻は国際経営論）に進みJohn Cantwell教授（当時の英国レディング大学教授、現ラトガースビジネススクール教授）に師事し、マレーシアの現地企業のイノベーションに与える多国籍企業の影響に関する博士論文を書きました。博士論文の一次データを入手するためにマレーシアでたくさんの方の協力を得て、100社以上の多国籍企業と現地企業にインタビューをしました。「異なる環境で得られた研究知識をシェアするのはなんて素敵なことなんだろう」というCantwell先生のお言葉をきっかけに、Cantwell門下唯一の在アジアになろうと2005年に帰国し現在に至ります。 2018年8月～2020年8月まで在外研究の機会を頂き、英国レディング大学Henley Business SchoolにVisiting Academiaとして滞在し、再びレディングの街で生活をし、レディング大学のFaculty memberと研究交流、共同研究をしてきました。

2008年～2012年までタイ王国タマサート大学ビジネススクールでも客員教授として教鞭を取っておりました。学部・大学院時代に大変お世話になったタイ人の方々に間接的でも良いので恩返しができないかと、様々な活動をタイや東南アジアでしています。2015年度からは日本能率協会主催の「アジア共・進化リーダーズフォーラム」のコーディネイターを務め、東南アジアで日本企業がこれまでと異なり共・進化を意識したビジネス活動ができるかどうか、というリサーチクエスチョンの下でシンガポール、フィリピン、タイ、インドネシア、ミャンマー、カンボジアを対象に研究のお手伝いをしています。学会活動では、Euro Asia Management Studies Associationというヨーロッパとアジアの架け橋となる学会の理事（Executive Secretary）、European International Business Academyというヨーロッパの研究者を中心とする学会では理事（National Representative of Japan）、そして、多国籍企業学会と国際ビジネス研究学会の理事をしています。研究以外では、FCCJ(日本外国特派員協会）、日英協会のメンバーとして（時々日本ウェールズ協会の活動にも参加します）活動しています。今後も、グローバルに通用する、魅力的な研究を英語で発信していくと同時に、英語で発信する日本の国際ビジネス若手研究者を増やすことに微力ながら貢献していきたいと思っています。
