Chess Club at UCR will be participating in the Collegiate Chess League. This will mark the first time that UCR will participate in a nationally ranked chess tournament!
The Collegiate Chess League is presently in its second season and is arranged by the Corporate E-sports Association (CEA). Every team that participates will have the chance to play against seven school teams over the regular season, which runs from 1/23 through 3/20. During each week, teams will play 16 games against one another. Winning teams will earn a match point - advancing their chances to partake in the playoffs scheduled for the Spring. A total of 89 teams representing 48 colleges will compete in this year's tournament. At the end of the regular season, school teams that earn the most match points within their respective divisions will be invited to participate in the playoffs.
This year, UCR will be sending two chess teams in the second CCL season which runs between 1/23 through 3/20. Our teams will be expected to play 16 games each per week. Each player will play 28 games in the season, or 112 games per team of four. The make-up of our chess teams was determined by the cumulative ratings from the 2020 season - which culminated with the All-Star Tournament. Team Captains Dylan Rojas and David Wong of UCR will lead the efforts of overseeing the Highlander's first two teams competing at the national level.
