Background: He was born in the River Harbor neighborhood. He remembers having a mother and father when he was little. His father was a river sailor and his mother worked at a warehouse where grain from upriver was stored short-term. He doesn’t know whether they were married or not, but they lived comfortably. When he was seven, his father didn’t return from a trip upriver. When he was nine, his mother died of riverside fever. He became one of the scrawny, unhealthy feral kids of the harbor.
At twelve, he was recruited by a gambler to help cheat the punters.
