Rufus Wellington Murray was born in Waynesboro, VA on June 1, 1917. He served as a Sergeant in the 3539TH ARMY AFB UNIT during World War I. Rufus was a beloved member of the Waynesboro Community, and very active in the community. He helped establish the Black community's recreational park, today known as North Park. He organized the youth baseball and football teams and created a softball team for girls. He also worked with the Waynesboro YMCA. The baseball diamond at North Park was dedicated to Rufus in 1983.
