Obie worked for DuPont for 18 years as a fork lift operator. He retired in 1962. He was a member of the Beverley Manor Baptist Church where he was deacon emeritus, a pianist, Director of Young Adult and Senior Choirs, Superintendent of Sunday School, and a previous trustee.
