PVT. Charles W. Dorcus died of disease in late November of 1918 while serving in Co. A. 549th Engineer Battalion. Engineers in World War I built roads, railroads, and ports. 40,000 Black men served as engineers during World War I.
Charles is buried at Fairview Cemetery in Waynesboro, VA.
