MODERATED DISCUSSION
Ryan Astengo
Meet Ryan Astengo!
Ryan transferred from East Los Angeles College in 2018. Ryan graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor's degree in June 2020. Ryan is a non-traditional parenting student, who has overcome several challenges and people who told him he couldn’t succeed in higher education. Ryan explains his pursuit and persistence in higher education “Street Gold”. Street Gold represents all the brilliance, talent, knowledge, and unique individuals that come from the streets.
Aside from the representation aspects, StreetGold is his message to people that can relate to me attending an institution of higher education that had to overcome obstacles in order to be successful. StreetGold represents those that overcame adversity in order to succeed, but it also represents those that want to be successful as well.
Ryan understands that education is power and that until POC are afforded the same opportunities and privileges to take up space in political and educational institutions, we will struggle for social justice and equality on every societal level and continue to fight!
Ryan wants to remind non-traditional and students with disabilities to be the rose that grew from the concrete.
