Meet one of our presenters!
Dr. JoAnn Roberts
Dr. JoAnn Roberts s(she/her) is a Bermuda-born Jamaican who immigrated to the United States in her elementary school years. She is the last of three children from her parents who were both K-12 teachers. Her passions are people, teaching, and music. Dr. Roberts has a B.A. in Biochemistry, M.S. in Biomedical Science and a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Pathobiology. Over the course of her academic career, she has engaged in oral cellular microbiology, eye biology and STEM education research.
In her role with the Center for Education Innovation & Learning in the Sciences (CEILS), Dr. Roberts seeks to develop inclusive and diverse STEM faculty. With the CEILS team, she leads workshops on inclusive and equitable teaching and mentoring practices, as well as anti-racist educator workshops for faculty, postdocs, and graduate students. She also implements programming to support and connect current faculty at regional colleges and universities and helps to develop a sustainable model for supporting regional graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and other working professionals interested in teaching and academic leadership.
Dr. Roberts also teaches Human Biology in the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) and has co-developed a scientific literacy journal club course at Cal State LA. She values teaching students to be self-regulated and metacognitive and recently published her teaching tool for integrating metacognitive regulation in the online classroom using student-developed learning plans (JMBE, 2021). Dr. Roberts also mentors undergraduate students and leads a grant-funded mentored vision science summer research program for undergraduate students from Historically Black College & University (HBCU) institutions.
One of Dr. Roberts’ favorite quotes by author and activist James Baldwin is that “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” She says “It reminds and encourages me to maintain a posture of growth and boldness. The world does not improve, technology does not advance, and relationships do not heal, if we do not critically examine our past and present and have the courage to act.”

Hey scholars, meet:
Ashley Shin
UCLA PhD Student in Chemistry
Ashley Jiwon Shin (or 신지원) is a graduate student working with Professor Justin Caram at University of California, Los Angeles. Ashley is on the physical chemistry track in the UCLA Ph.D. program with a focus on spectroscopy.
Physical chemistry is a challenging field that studies molecular behaviors and models them using a mixture of quantum mechanical and classical laws. Ashley is fascinated by research in physical chemistry because it unifies my interests in chemistry, engineering, and computer science. To tackle this field, researchers of multiple disciplines collaborate, attempting to observe the tiniest of interactions in nature. She is attracted to the lifestyle of a scientist, who serves as a member of the global academic community that works together for scientific development. Thus, Ashley aspires to complete her graduate studies in physical chemistry and become an influential academic scientist.
Hey scholars, meet:
Charlene Salamat
UCLA PhD Student in Chemistry
Charlene Salamat is a Graduate Student Researcher at in the department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles. She received her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of California Santa Barbara. You will learn more about Charlene’s journey as a PhD.
Hey scholars, meet:
Omar Leon
UCLA PhD Student
In 2018, Omar Leon received his bachelor’s degree from Kalamazoo College in Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics. Omar decided to pursue his Ph.D. studies at UCLA, where he is doing research in Professor Ben Schwartz’s group.
During his time at Kalamazoo, Omar was awarded the college’s First Year Award in Chemistry for his commitment to education, giving back to his community, and academic success.
His experience at the NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates internship program at Syracuse University in New York, led him realized that he wanted to become a professor. “I wanted to use my knowledge and position as leverage to help students of color from low-socioeconomic backgrounds attain research experiences,”
As one of the leaders of the Kalamazoo university’s Young Men of Color group, he learned more about leadership and the importance that representation has on younger students.
During his time at UCLA, Omar has been volunteering for the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) programs for education and outreach to the community. Through this program, he has been able to volunteered for Univision’s outreach event for underprivileged Spanish speaking communities, bringing nanoscience to the students and their families. “My hope is that, as a student of color from a low-socioeconomic background, my presence at these outreach events will encourage the younger generation of students to feel more confident about their own abilities,” he said.
