Twitter content is pulled from multiple streams: from accessible/generalist biodiversity content, to the specifics of the negotiations at COP.
Twitter works on volume and frequency for exposure rather than necessarily requiring a high bar for engagement with individual posts. However, it is important to keep an engagement rate above 1% (excellent in the nonprofit sector).
As one of the primary channels for engagement with partners, this platform demands the most time.
Posting frequency: 6+ tweets per day, plus unlimited retweets
Original tweets are derived from the CBD website, partner organizations, the news media, popular websites, scientific journals and more.
Retweets are derived from tracking partner activities and relevant hashtags (e.g. #ForNature, #Biodiversity) on Tweetdeck
Far and away the most successful content contains a visual or design component (e.g. a photo, link preview, social media card, or short video).
Videos can be a maximum of 2:20.
During COP14, retweets using the event hashtags were shared on our channel at a rate of 100 - 200 per day.
These posts were debuted as a part of the day-long #WorldWetlandsDay campaign on our channels, which targeted multiple timezones
They tagged a number of relevant and influential partners
Both used the official hashtags of the UN observance of World Wetlands Day (e.g. #KeepWetlands): these change every year
The GIF post (from Ramsar) was a simple and attractive illustration
The video post used a variety of stock footage elements from global wetlands
The video post used natural sound effects from Yellowstone National Park
Emojis in the captions were playful, but not overbearing
The Executive Secretaryโs Twitter account provides a means of putting a human face on CBD messaging.
In addition to sharing CBD updates and key messages, the account aims to raise the ESโ profile as a thought leader by offering a personal perspective on biodiversity-related news and development, including international days.
Through Twitter, the Executive Secretary engages with other biodiversity and UN leaders and has participated in a number of global communications campaigns and โchallengesโ.
Posting frequency: 3-5 tweets per week, plus unlimited retweets
Original tweets based on and/or feature:
Executive Secretary statements, media appearances and placements, etc.
Meetings and events organized by CBD and key partners, especially where ES is participating
ES response to biodiversity-related news and developments
Messages to CBD Parties and stakeholders
Retweets are derived from tracking partner activities and relevant hashtags. The account should heavily retweet content from the UN Biodiversity account, partner organizations and other biodiversity leaders.

One way to make tweets stand out is through the use of special Unicode fonts. A "Twitter Fonts" generator can be found here.
