Report Text

Report text is a type of text that describes something in general. It is written to provide factual information about a subject, usually based on systematic observation or research. It purpose to describe the way things are, with reference to a range of natural, man-made, and social phenomena in the world. 

Structure

1. General Classification

Tells what is being described and introduces the topic generally.

2. Description

Gives the details of the topic, such as physical features, habits, uses, etc.

Language Features 

• Use of general nouns (e.g., animals, planets, computers).

• Use of present tense 

• Use of relating verbs (e.g., is, are, has, have).

• Use of technical terms 

Example

The Dolphin

Dolphins are highly intelligent aquatic mammals that are part of the cetacean family, which also includes whales and porpoises. They are known for their playful behavior, high intelligence, and social nature. Dolphins are found in oceans and seas around the world, and some species also live in rivers.

Dolphins have streamlined bodies that are well adapted to their aquatic environment. They usually have a gray-colored body with a lighter underside. Most dolphins range in size from 1.5 to 4 meters in length and can weigh between 100 to 300 kilograms, depending on the species.

Dolphins breathe through a blowhole located on top of their heads, and they must come to the surface regularly to breathe air. They are known for their excellent communication skills and often use clicks, whistles, and body movements to communicate with each other.

Dolphins are carnivores. Their diet mainly consists of fish and squid. They use echolocation to find and catch their prey, a method where they emit sound waves and listen to the echo to locate objects.

Dolphins are social animals that live in groups called pods. These pods can consist of a few individuals to over a hundred dolphins. Dolphins are also known for helping injured individuals in their pod and even protecting humans from danger in some reported cases.

Although dolphins are protected in many parts of the world, they still face threats from pollution, fishing nets, and hunting in some regions.
