It purpose to present and consider various opinions or perspectives about an issue, so the reader can make a balanced judgment or decision.

Generic Structure

1. Issue

Introduces the topic or problem that is being discussed.

2. Arguments for

Presents reasons or evidence supporting the topic or issue.

3. Arguments against

Presents reasons or evidence opposing the topic or issue.

4. Conclusion / Recommendation

Summarizes both sides and may give the writer’s own opinion or suggestion.

Language Features

• Use of simple present tense

• Use of modality (e.g., may, should, must, can)

• Use of connectives for contrast and comparison (e.g., however, on the other hand, while, although)

• Use of objective and formal language
