Midway between Johannesburg and Durban on an idyllic piece of land, encircled by awe-inspiring mountains you will find Amphitheatre Backpackers. The lodge takes its name from “The Amphitheatre," the most famous geographic feature of the Northern Drakensberg, South Africa. The Amphitheatre is widely regarded as one of the most impressive cliffs faces on earth. The lodge looks directly onto its facade and on a clear day, after the rains, the Thukela (Thunder in Zulu) Falls can be seen as it plunges just under 1km down the ancient rock face.

The grasslands are populated with buck, small mammals and an abundance of bird life that thrive in the dams, river and wetlands. It is not just the natural beauty that has people talking, the architecture is also fantastic. Unique dwellings are crafted from stone and thatch, with stained glass, mosaics, metal and wooden carvings.
