The competent teacher structures a safe and healthy learning environment that facilitates cultural and linguistic responsiveness, emotional well-being, self-efficacy, positive social interaction, mutual respect, active engagement, academic risk-taking, self-motivation, and personal goal-setting.
Uses strategies to create a smoothly functioning learning community in which students assume responsibility for themselves and one another, participate in decision-making, work collaboratively and independently, use appropriate technology, and engage in purposeful learning activities.
This is the job chart that I used to keep track of student jobs this semester. Each week the student that was responsible for each job changed so that all students were able to experience the responsiblitly of each job. This artifact connects to standard 4K because it initiates student responsibiltiy in their own educational experience. Having a job in class provides students with a sense of purpose and ownership. Through utilizing a job chart, I have learned that students love having autonomy and ownership over their educational journey. Students rarely ever complained about being assigned a job, they often were excited about it. It has inspired me to find more ways for students to take on responsiblities in class.
Uses a variety of effective behavioral management techniques appropriate to the needs of all students that include positive behavior interventions and supports.
My colleagues and I decided to use an individual reward system this school year to positively reinforce good behavior. At the end of each week, a student from each grade level is chosen as the "All-Star of the Week". This student's good behavior is recognized in front of their peers and they are presented with a medal to show their friends and family at home. Then, photos of each all-star as well as an "all about me" form that they fill out is presented on the bulletin board in the gym for the next week. This connects to standard 4O because it is a source of positive reinforcement for all students in P.E. Since implementing this reward system, I have learned how important it is to recognize and celebrate every student's accomplishments. I have also learned that having a specific goal to work towards, such as receiving an all-star of the week award, positively impacts student behavior in class.
