The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions drive by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
Appropriately uses a variety of formal and informal assessments to evaluate the understanding, progress, and performance of an individual student and the class as a whole.
This is the grading system that we use for K-5 physical education at Morgan Park Academy. Students are given a grade in each of these categories; the grades possible are concerning, beginning, developing, or secure. This artifact connects to standard 7K because I use all of the formal and informal assessments that I completed throughout the semester to decide what each students grade should be. I learned how important it is to keep detailed records of students understanding, progress, and performance throughout the school year. Not only will these records help you make the most accurate decisions about your students' grades, but it will also help you justify these grades to students, parents, administration, etc if/when it is necessary.
Involves students in self-assessment activities to help them become aware of their strengths and needs and encourages them to establish goals for learning.
This chart is hanging up by the door in each gym space that students use. Before students leave class, they are asked to touch the photo that they think describes their effort and participation in class that day. This connects to standard 7L because it involves students reflecting on their time in class that day and self-assessing how they think they did. I always tell students to reflect honestly and keep their reflections in mind when they come to class the next day and develop a goal for improvement. Through doing this, I have learned that most students have high expectations of themselves. Many students, despite having a great day in class, will say they need more effort or need to try harder. It is great to see that students want to be the best version of themselves and always strive to do better.
