The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.
Understands the cognitive processes associated with various kinds of learning and ensures attention to these learning processes so that students can master content standards.
This is an example of a behavior plan used for a kindergarten student. The students homeroom teacher as well as their specials teachers fill out the chart throughout the week and the feedback is sent home to their family at the end of each week. This artifact connects to standard 2C because it acknowledges that every student has a different thought process that impacts their behavior and learning in school. By documenting these processes and sharing the feedback with the students family, we are able to see which areas the student needs to most help in, how the student grows throughout the school year, and get the family more involved in the student's education. I work with multiple students who are on a behavior plan. By working with these students and filling out their behavior plans, I have learned how best to help them be successful in my classroom as well as communication skills with both colleagues and families.
Adjusts practice to meet the needs of each student in the content areas.
This is an example of an exercise modification that I have used in my classroom. My students have various skill levels and physical capabilities, so it is important to provide modifications when possible. This artifact connects to standard 2P because providing visual modifications such as this allows all students to participate and be successful. When I started teaching elementary P.E., I learned very quickly that my students are all at very different points in their physical and athletic skill development. Utilizing exercise modifications has helped all of my students feel more confident in my class. Instead of giving up if they cannot do something, they are presented with other options to participate and succeed.
