Why I'm not on social media
I focus on work with youth - teens and young adults. So I have to know at least something about social media, right? I’ve been on TikTok and Instagram and Snapchat and Discord and Meta/Facebook and Pinterest. I’ve taken webinars on marketing through social media. I've read the research about how horrible it all is. I've read the research that says it's awesome. So, why can’t you find me on any of those platforms? Well, I do have a light presence on LinkedIn - there's a link at the bottom of my home page. I also confess that I'm a little intrigued by Blue Sky right now. One of these days, it may rope me in.
Here is where I’m at on the subject at the moment:
* The influencers whose presence I am personally most drawn to do amazing work. It takes a lot of time! I’d rather spend that time with people (like, um, in person). It's just not a point of passion for me.
* Can social media be beneficial? Of course! Does it carry risks? Definitely. From a social justice perspective, I’m just not sure it’s a good time to support the folks behind the algorithms that draw people into potentially unhelpful rabbit holes.
* I know it’s terribly old fashioned, but … I’d rather live a life that’s a little more personal.
