I forgot how difficult traditional was during the summer break. I tried to be less reliant on my mechanical pencil and began using darker pencils (like 12B!!!!! I had no idea 12B existed). Trying to change up my rendering methods this block was an added challenge. When I was looking back at my first year work, I noticed how grey and light my works often end up looking so I wanted to improve upon that. Since I wasn't using a mechanical pencil as much as my other pieces, I did feel like the edges of my pieces where becoming fuzzy and messy so this is something I will also have to work on. My lectures also mentioned how I am quite hesitant to go darker which is why I take so long on my pieces. I agree with this and I should try and find a more streamlined approach to rendering - like starting with bold and confident core shadows.

This was a really challenging block. I forced myself to use Photoshop for the majority of my piece instead of resorting back to Procreate. I did use procreate when I was trying to make a lot of messy changes but I was straight back to Photoshop once I needed to photo bash. Photoshop is far better at retaining the quality of the images than Procreate is, and there are very few layers available when on the iPad which makes it difficult to work with, leading to very destructive workflows.

I was so excited and hopeful about this project and I loved making the block out and sculpting etc. With this excitement came a lot of saturated focus on game production, leading to my 2D projects being left behind and forgotten. I believe I still have a long way to go before my textures are up to standard. I guess the endurance it takes to get to the texturing stage is still immense for me and so once I finally do reach texturing, I am so drained that I don't give it much time or effort. I am satisfied with the outcome of this piece because I learnt a lot in this block and I think it is far better than my last environment piece I completed last year, despite it not evolving into what I wanted it to become. I gained a bit more confidence in using Unreal and I even animated a lamp swaying and added Niagra Systems to make the environment more engaging.
When learning something new and going outside of my comfort zone I shouldn't expect perfection by the end of it. I had a lot of new things to learn this block and adopt new work flows so I am proud of my hard work. I am, however, unsatisfied with the way I balanced my projects. I put a lot of effort on my Game Production work and left 2D completely in the dust. I wasn't keeping up with my blog as consistently as I should have, and I left my traditional artworks to pile up until the end when I have always completed them as I went in every block previously. When talking about my work I struggled to find the word to express how I did what I did because a lot of the time it was just what felt right in the moment. I found it much easier to talk about the works of professionals because it seemed like their work was far more intentional than mine.
Another thing I noticed through this block is that I forget to look at references when I am so engulfed in the process of completing my projects. I look at interest at the very beginning of the process but then I forget it exists once I have made my decision on the subject matter that I will be designing.
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
Prioritise the traditional art pieces in order of when they were set. Don't let the attention of other subjects distract you from completing assignment in date order.
Use post-it-notes to remind yourself to focus on key aspects of a piece rather than getting overwhelmed by everything at once
Develop your PowerPoint slides as you progress!! I have always done this in the past but because I was using a different method, software, etc, I pushed it out of the way and left it for future me to think about.
Write down weekly goals and daily goals on what I want to achieve in my coursework. I felt very scatter-brained in this block because I was thinking about everything at once... so naturally nothing at all.
Make Study Notes!!! I can't believe I haven't been making notes from the classes I attend. I always tell myself I will do it but then I am so focused on getting the work done that I never give myself the time to reflect on the taught material. I also want to make these notes perfect so it leads me not to do them at all. I need to make this process SIMPLE. AS SIMPLE as I possibly can!!!
Update and get my blog polished WEEKLY!!
Collate EFFECTIVE mood boards and reference boards and don't forget to look at texture references when further into the development process.
During this block I also did a few other things which I should be proud of. asside from moving in, I am now part of the Jiu Jitsu comittee and so I ran the fresher's fair stall along with my other comittee members. This got me out of my comfort zone to approach people and advertise our sports club. I also made my own haloween costume to cosplay as Cruella De Vile. For props I painted a cereal box to transform it into the Kanine Krunchies dog biscuit cereal box and baked Short bread cookies in the shape of the Kanine Krunchies bones to hand them out. On a more serious note, I also completed my CV around this time and wrote my very first cover letter.
