"Toi Takitini" is the name given to our collaborative mural project at Carlton School. Toi Takitini is a term that describes the approach as collaborative and It involves the community, teachers, support workers and our learners.
We have different levels of contribution which begun as gathering voice from all stakeholders.
We are using our framework "He Kuranga Tukutuku" to guide our content and support our "cultural influences" within the framework across the school. We utilise our school wide inquiry process for the development of the project and the learning with our students.
The initial idea conceived in 2019, was to show the uniqueness and the diverse nature of our families and our learners within a cultural context.
Culture and identity were the "main" drivers for the initial idea as the concept. Other components to enhance the concept were added over time. These included; the Māori worldview development, our learner agency focus, our community values and the use of contexts to further develop the art curriculum and visual literacy. ALL contexts are derived from our community voice.
Kia ora whānau. As a result of our survey, our visual theme is combination of our environment and our NZ cultures. Thank you to all for participating.

Community Voice
Ideas from the community are gathered and potential contexts are considered. A universal theme is determined to connect all the contexts as both a narrative and artistic connections. It is hoped that the mural will also serve as learning tool to support culture and heritage.
Art and Art Literacy
The purpose and intent is communicated to all the students of Carlton School through programmes and their skills are further developed and enhanced. Programmes are delivered in Te Whare Manaaki and the approach is school wide.
Construct and Create
The media for the artwork is determined and work begins to piece together our visual narrative and transferred on to the wall. It is hoped that our community and our learners will participate throughout this whole process.
Our community voice was gathered using a survey. This was useful in terms of convenience and gathering community contributions (voice).
