General Information
About Us/ Ko Wai Mātou?
At Carlton School we demonstrate pride in the culture and heritage of Aotearoa New Zealand through a whole school curriculum founded in Māori Worldview.
We group our Learners/Akonga in a variety of ways for learning:- single cell classes, and composite classes (multiple year levels).
We foster learner agency through collaborative learning programmes, along with active learning.
We allow tree climbing and hut building. Students can ride their scooters, skateboards, bikes, skates and go karts in the playground every break time.
We like to get physical with plenty of sports teams to join, daily fitness for the whole school and annual whole school sporting events.
We like our ākonga to be as creative, in as many ways as possible.

Enrolling @ Carlton
Implementation of an Enrolment Scheme at Carlton School
To avoid overcrowding, or the likelihood of overcrowding, the board of Carlton School has implemented an enrolment scheme that has been developed by the Secretary for Education.
Under this scheme, students will be entitled to enrol if they live within the home zone. The enrolment scheme, which includes a precise description of the home zone, may be viewed at the school office and on the school website.
The enrolment of out-of-zone students is governed by the provisions of the Education and Training Act 2020.
Enrolment at Carlton School for 2025
Enrolment at Carlton School is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available from the school office.
The Carlton School Board has determined that for 2025 there are likely to be up to 20 out-of-zone places at new entrant level. The exact number of places will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within the school’s home zone. There are currently no out-of zone places at other year levels.
Applications for 2025 will close on Monday the 14th of October 2024. If the number of out-of-zone applications exceeds the number of places available students will be selected by ballot to be held on Friday the 18th of October 2024. Parents will be advised of the result of their application by Wednesday the 23rd of October 2024.
Parents of students who live within the home zone planning to enrol in 2025 are also encouraged to advise the school by this date to assist us plan appropriately.
Any unfilled places or additional places that become available during 2025 will be advertised midway through the preceding term - please see the school website for details.
Transition to School for New Entrants/ Te Urunga Mai
To give all 5 year olds the best start possible to their schooling, we offer parents the opportunity to bring their child, prior to their start date, to a series of school visits where the child can join in on class activities and mix with the class. Parents have the opportunity to meet with Principal and have a tour of the school. This helps make the transition to school as worry-free as possible for children and their families.
At Carlton School we have new entrant cohort entry dates, which means children turning five either start school at the beginning of a term or in Week 6 of the term.
It is advised to enrol your child around their 4th birthday, and once they are enrolled our New Entrant transition teacher will make contact with you closer to their 5th Birthday to organise pre-school classroom visits and arrange their start at school date.
Most five year olds have had some pre-school experience; regardless of that you can help make their transition to school easier by teaching them to:
recognise their name (write it if possible)
dress themselves
put shoes on and do them up (velcro, laces, buckles)
recognise colours and numbers to ten
count to ten
say (not "sing") the alphabet
unwrap food packages such as muesli bars
peel fruit e.g. bananas and oranges
use manners such as "excuse me","please" and "thank you"
use a toilet and manage personal hygiene
We also accept enrolments for older children locally or from other regions.
Stationery/ Ngā Pukapuka
Stationery packs are available throughout the year from Paper Plus in Trafalgar Square.
