Principal's Message - Te Karere a Te Tumuaki
Kia ora e te whānau, Greetings, Dia daoibh, Sin sibh, Annyeong haseyo, Tēnā koutou katoa, Choum reap sor, สบายดี Sabaidee, Ni sa bula, Nǐ hǎo ma 你好
One of the highlights for me this term has been having morning tea every Monday with tamariki from across the school. Each week, teachers choose someone to come along, share some kai, and have a chat. It’s always fun, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know our kids a little better.
A huge mihi to our 30 runners who represented Carlton at the Aranui Inter-School Cross Country on Tuesday. The weather wasn’t flash, but they gave it heaps and showed determination to the finish line. I’m very proud of the way our team competed and carried themselves. Thank you Miss T and Whaea Eden for braving the elements and managing our crew.
Yesterday, our Try-Time Carlton team had an outstanding day at the Whanganui Inter-School Rugby Tournament. Coming 2nd in Pool A, they battled their way into the top division, finishing 4th overall. Fierce running, relentless chasing, strong tackling, and 15 tries scored by six different players! For some tamariki it was their very first time playing tackle rugby, and they did so with courage and skill. Ngā mihi to Mr Edgecombe, Whāea Ammie, our whānau supporters, and most of all the team, for making it such a successful day.
It’s been brilliant to see all our classes getting out and about this term. We’ve visited Te Whare o Rehua Sarjeant Art Gallery, Whanganui Regional Museum, Splash Centre, Kaitiaki Farm Eco School, Whanganui Library, Springvale Park, Rutherford Intermediate, and Whanganui Intermediate. These excursions are a rich part of our learning journey and add huge value to our curriculum.
Next Tuesday a Carlton rōpū will be joining over 20 schools from across Whanganui in a hikoi up Victoria Ave to celebrate 50 years of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. It will be a powerful occasion, and we’re proud to take part in honouring and celebrating te reo rangatira.
Thank you for all your support. We’re proud of our Carlton kids and the strong partnerships we have with our community. If you have any concerns or queries I can be contacted at 0278562962 or gjohnston@welearn.school.nz. Additionally, all our teachers can be contacted through their work emails, which are available on our school website.
Waiho i te toipoto, kaua i te toiroa - Let us keep close together, not wide apart
Mā te wā, See you soon.

Thank you to everyone who purchased a ticket to support our Year 5 and 6 camp raffle fundraiser. Congratulations to our three winners:
Tickets: AAAA2, PPP10 & DD7
To register your child for a summer sport, please complete the registration form before Thursday 18th of September. Registrations close at this date. Use a seperate form for each child if you are registering more than one.
After-school sports are additional activities that we can offer with parent support. We believe that these opportunities are important for our tamariki. The teams are not part of the curriculum, and are not school funded. Carlton offers a few sports each term, but they can only be run when we have parent volunteers to take teams and support. We have had many fantastic people take on these roles over the years, and they are very much appreciated.
We must have coaches to enter teams. If you are able to assist, do complete that section.
We will assist those new to coaching to get you sorted and running.
If we do not have enough players, or a coach, unfortunately we can not enter teams.
Coaches children DO NOT HAVE TO PAY FEES - Free entry
