What a great vibe we have had around the school today. It was awesome to see so many of our community join us early this morning for our Puanga celebrations. Acknowledging Matariki/Puanga together as a school whānau is always a highlight, and today was no exception. I want to extend a huge thank you to Robin Ohia and Hayley Collins for their mahi behind the scenes to ensure today was such a success.
The rest of today is focused on Kotahitanga/Community. We have two groups, our Year 1-3s and our Year 4-6s, out and about on a hikoi through our local community. They will be learning some local history while also rolling up their sleeves to tidy up an area of need. It’s a wonderful way for our tamariki to give back to the community that supports them.
It was so good to see all our many diverse cultures and nationalities represented last Thursday. Our Football World Cup Cultural Celebration was a huge success. It was fantastic that so many whānau were able to come along and join us for lunch. Seeing our multicultural community thrive and celebrate together is exactly what makes Carlton School so special.
A shout-out to our Inter-School Hockey team who showed they had what it takes to knock out some great games at the Whanganui Schools Tournament last Tuesday. They played with great sportsmanship and determination. A big Congratulations to Mathayus, Lena, Enoch, Wren, One, Kianu, Awanui, Amaia-Jai, Tema, Kahurangi, and Charlie. Ka pai te mahi.
Behind the classroom doors, it has been a very busy year as we adjust to, and plan for, the newly refreshed Mathematics and English Curricula. Our teachers have done a fantastic job of adapting and managing their own professional development, all while maintaining teaching programmes for our kids. I want to personally acknowledge all the additional, often unseen work that these amazing kaiako do to ensure the best learning outcomes for our children. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated team.
Mid-year reports are now published to the eTap @school app. These reports give you a clear picture of where your child is currently at with their learning. Please note that the Ministry's new standards for achievement are significantly more demanding than in previous years, which has resulted in a very diverse range of results across the board.
Because of this, our upcoming Learning Conversations on Monday and Tuesday next week are more important than ever. This is a valuable, face-to-face time to discuss your child’s progress, celebrate their wins, and look at where their next learning steps are. If you have any questions or concerns about the new reporting standards, please bring them along to discuss with your child’s teacher.
Thank you all for your continued partnership and support with your child’s learning journey. Enjoy the weekend, and we look forward to catching up with you all on Monday and Tuesday.
If you have any concerns or queries I can be contacted at 0278562962 or gjohnston@welearn.school.nz . Additionally, all our teachers can be contacted through their work emails, which are available on our school website.
Mātai ki te Rangi, tērā ko Puanga, te tohu mō te tau hou - Gaze towards the heavens, there is Puanga, heralding the new year.
Mā te wā, See you soon.

Please use the @school parent app to make a booking with your child's teacher on either Monday 22nd or Tuesday 23rd June. Please email Hayley in the school office if you would like to book in a time with either Mr Johnston (Principal) or Mr Ohia (Te Whare Manaaki Kaiako).
Our tamariki are excited about earning a free pizza! We've enrolled in the Hell Pizza Reading Challenge. All students need to do is read a book, write a short review (our juniors can do this orally), have a pizza wedge signed off by a teacher, and once they've read 7 books they can exchange it for a FREE PIZZA! A big thanks to Hell Pizza Whanganui for supporting this.
This term ends on Friday 3rd July and Term 3 begins Monday 20th July.
As the weather is cooling down, please make sure your child is coming to school wearing their school fleece. We have a small supply of KidsCan warm jackets at school. Please email Hayley if you are in need of one for your child and we can arrange one.
Please discourage your child from bringing toys and squishies to school. There is no need to bring these and they can cause issues as they get broken, lost etc.
A reminder to make sure all of your child's items are named. All uniform items, as well as swimming bags, school bags, shoes, jackets - everything! It makes it so much easier to return lost items when they are named.
A huge thanks to the Whanganui District Council's Climate Change Action Fund for supporting us to purchase some new tools for the garden and two great compost bins! Some keen tamariki helped Whāea Mel put these together earlier this week!
Congratulations to the following tamariki who have recently been awarded in class Duffy certificates celebrating all their hard mahi:
Ayva Beri, Kobe Morehu, Isaac Kauika, Scarlett Takarua, Rebecca Swinburne, Mikaere Tepu, Hadley Henderson, Ivy-Moon Bardell, Belle Beijeman and Rayleigh O'Brien.

Next, they got into a netball game and played well in their teams to get the ball down the court to their shooters. We look forward to Yasmin coming again next Thursday for her final session with us.
