Principal's Message - Te Karere a Te Tumuaki
Kia ora e te whānau, Greetings, Dia daoibh, Sin sibh, Annyeong haseyo, Tēnā koutou katoa, Choum reap sor, สบายดี Sabaidee, Ni sa bula, Nǐ hǎo ma 你好
It has been another busy and rewarding couple of weeks at Carlton, with plenty happening both in and beyond the classroom.
Congratulations to our Carlton Triathlon Team: Lena, Wren, Enoch, Taonga, Neeva, Dhruhi, Cameryn and Lily, who competed in the Whanganui Primary Schools Triathlon on Tuesday. They represented Carlton with pride, determination, and gave it heaps. Events like this are a great reminder that success is not just about crossing the line first, it’s about effort, resilience, and having a go.
We are also very proud to announce our first rōpū of Ngā Tuakana for the year. Ngā Tuakana are our senior student leaders who model Carlton’s values and support other learners through the principle of tuakana-teina. Congratulations to Logan, Mathayus, Charlie, Lochlan, Amelia-Rose, Halo, Ivy, Beena, Mia, Erina and Kahurangi. Leadership at Carlton is about manaakitanga, responsibility, and setting the tone for others. We look forward to seeing this group grow into that role across the year.
Our Year 4-6 tamariki are also looking forward to a special event this Friday, when we host Te Puoro Whakaari ki ngā Kura/Opera in Schools performing ‘Red’. These productions are cleverly adapted so that tamariki can experience the fun and drama of opera in a school setting. With costumes, sets and singers transforming our hall into an opera house, it promises to be a memorable experience.
It was also fantastic to see so many parents and whānau at last week’s “Your Child Through Your Eyes” hui. These catch-ups allow us to better understand your child as a learner and as a person. The insights you share help us strengthen the partnership between home and school, which ultimately benefits our tamariki.
Over the past two weeks we have had an unusually high number of staff absences due to illness and bereavements. This has meant our systems have been stretched at times as we worked to secure relievers and maintain classroom programmes. I want to thank you for your patience and understanding. Please be assured that we check in regularly with classes when there are changes in teachers, and we work hard to ensure students retain continuity in their learning and routines.
Finally, a reminder that to support the security of bikes and scooters at school, we are offering an optional lock-up service between 9:00am and 3:00pm. Unlocked racks will still be available for students who wish to use their bikes or scooters during the day, and we encourage the use of personal locks wherever possible.
As always, thank you for your continued support of our school and the opportunities we create together for our tamariki. If you have any concerns or queries I can be contacted at 0278562962 or gjohnston@welearn.school.nz. Additionally, all our teachers can be contacted through their work emails, which are available on our school website.
E kore au e ngaro, he kākano i ruia mai i Rangiātea - I will never be lost, for I am a seed sown in Rangiātea
Mā te wā, See you soon.

School Photos
Unique key codes have been sent to email addresses of parents/caregivers by Photolife. Please check your spam/junk folder if you have not seen it, as it is a new system, the messages may be filtered. Please contact the school office if you still haven't received anything. Free delivery to school is available until midnight on Sunday 22nd March. You can still place orders after this date but there will be a delivery charge.
Dental Gig
We currently have the Community Oral Health Service Dental Gig onsite at school. They will be seeing tamariki over the rest of the term. If you have not yet returned the yellow dental form your child brought home last week, please do so as soon as possible.
Attendance
OUR EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENT ATTENDANCE
Regular attendance at school is important to your child’s success and there is a clear connection between going to school regularly and doing well in the classroom. Making sure students attend and engage in learning is a shared responsibility. As a parent/caregiver, you are responsible for making sure your child attends school every day.
If your child is going to be absent for any reason it is essential that you let us know as soon as possible. It is important that you contact the school office to confirm your child’s absence and provide us with the reason.
We acknowledge that there are genuine reasons students may occasionally be absent. However, without regular attendance your child will struggle to make progress. If your child is absent regularly, or for extended periods, we will reach out to you to discuss the situation. We are committed to supporting your child to attend school.
If you’re having difficulty getting your child to school, please contact your child's teacher or the school office. We can work with you to develop a support plan that addresses any barriers to regular attendance. More information on attendance, including your rights and responsibilities as parents or caregivers, is available on the Ministry of Education’s webpage: Attendance.
Drop-off Bay
The Carlton Ave drop-off bay (near the Foodmarket) continues to work well. Please keep this to quick drop-offs only and move on promptly. The parks are for staff only, please do not park in these. The Churchill Crescent gate remains strictly for service vehicles and must not be used by parents or caregivers.
Our road patrol team have successfully completed their training with Constable Paul from NZ Police and have been awarded their badges. Ka rawe!
Last Wednesday Melissa and Caitlin from Central Football came at lunchtime to run a girls football skills session. They had a great turnout of players and demonstrated an array of fantastic football skills, finishing with a friendly game.
