We are ripping through the term and there’s plenty happening across the school. It has been fantastic seeing our tamariki involved in so many different opportunities, whether it’s in the classroom, on the sports field, or representing Carlton out in the community. The way our tamariki step up, support one another, and give things a crack is something we are very proud of.
Tino pai to our Chess Interschool team: Enoch, One,Tyla, Mathayus, Hadley, and Rayleigh who competed in the Whanganui Primary Schools Champs on Tuesday. The team played exceptionally well and showed focus, perseverance, and sportsmanship throughout the competition. Chess requires patience, strategic thinking, and resilience, and our students displayed all of those qualities brilliantly. Well done team, awesome mahi.
Congratulations also to our Netball Interschool team: Halo, Karlee, Amelia-Rose, Ellablu, Beena, Erina, Sophie, Mia, Awanui, Harper, and Sophie-Jay who competed in last Tuesday’s Whanganui Schools Tournament. The team gave an awesome effort throughout the day and represented Carlton with pride. It was great to see our tamariki encouraging one another, working together, and competing hard. A massive thank you to Miss Collins and Mrs Palmer for coaching and managing the team. We appreciate all the time and energy that you put into helping this team shine. Also a big shout out to the staff who challenged our team to a game on Friday lunchtime. A close fought, and very entertaining match.
I would like to thank Helen O’Leary for teaching in He Puna Whāwhā (Room 9) this term. Helen has done a wonderful job supporting the class and ensuring continuity of learning while we awaited the arrival of our new kaiako. We greatly appreciate her contribution to Carlton during this time.
We are looking forward to welcoming Samantha Odendaal to Carlton on June 2 as she begins in He Puna Whāwhā. We know she will be a fantastic addition to our kura and we are excited for her to become part of the Carlton community.
Thank you to our whānau for your ongoing support. Carlton is a special place because of the strong partnerships between home and school, and the collective effort to ensure our tamariki are thriving, connected, and successful. If you have any concerns or queries I can be contacted at 0278562962 or gjohnston@welearn.school.nz . Additionally, all our teachers can be contacted through their work emails, which are available on our school website.

Carlton News
King's Birthday
School will be closed on Monday 1st June for King's Birthday public holiday.
Bike & Scooter Lock Up
To assist with bike and scooter security we provide a 'lock up' service for those who would like it. Scooters and bikes left in the designated 'locked' racks (they have a sign) will be locked between 9.00am and 3.00pm. This does mean that they can not be accessed if children want to use them at lunchtime. The Bike Lock rack will be on the side of the art shed near Te Whare Manaaki, and scooters will be locked in the racks by the hall door.
All the other racks will not be locked for those who want to access their bike/scooter during the day. Children can (and are encouraged) to bring their own individual lock to secure their bike/scooter themselves in these racks.
Please make sure you have named your child's scooter/bike.
Garden Team
These keen Carlton Gardeners had a great time on Tuesday eating the lettuce we've been growing and planting spinach seeds. A huge thanks, once again, to the Springvale Garden Center, who continue to support our school garden.
Health Matters
Students who have been unwell with vomiting and/or diarrhoea need to stay home until they have been symptom free for 48 hours.
We have had a few reported cases of school sores (impetigo) within our community. Please be assured this is a very common, highly treatable, and temporary childhood skin condition. Action required to prevent spread:
Children with suspected sores must remain at home until 24 hours after starting medical treatment (antibiotics), or until all sores have dried and scabbed over.
Swimming must be avoided until all sores have completely healed.
Upon returning to school, any remaining sores must be covered with a waterproof bandage.
Hygiene Measures: Encourage frequent hand washing, keep fingernails short, and avoid sharing towels, bedding, or drink bottles.
See healthy skin information below:
Our school is part of the Ministry of Education's nationwide Ikura initiative, which provides free period products for students. Any student who needs these can easily access them in the senior block girls toilets. They are also available from the office.
A reminder that if your child needs to take any medication at school, a consent form must be signed and the medication given to the office. No students are permitted to have any medication in their pockets or school bags. This includes asthma inhalers and paracetamol.
A friendly reminder not to park on any yellow lines around the school, even to just drop off or pick up. Thank you for helping to keep our tamariki safe.
All winter sports are underway and the fees are now overdue. Please make payment to the school bank account:
02-0792-0018259-05, using your child's name and the sport they are playing as a reference.
Football - $20 (Year 1 & 2 players), $50 (Year 3-6 players), Netball - $45 per player and Basketball - $30 per player.
Thank you to those who have already made payment. If you are having difficulty with paying sports fees, please contact the office.
