Welcome back to Term 4. It’s hard to believe we’re already into the final eleven weeks of 2025 - the year has certainly flown by. This term, our focus is on consolidating and celebrating all the learning, growth, and achievements our tamariki have made throughout the year.
You may have heard talk of a proposed NZEI strike day on Thursday 23rd October. While we support our colleagues in this union, the action will not affect Carlton. School will remain open as usual.
It was awesome to spend Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at Forest Lakes with our Year 5/6 tamariki. Their enthusiasm, teamwork, and resilience were outstanding. It was great to see them challenging themselves, supporting each other, and having so much fun together. A huge thank you to our Year 5/6 teachers for organising this opportunity. It takes a massive amount of additional work, and we really appreciate it. Also thank you to the parents who came along and supported. It’s always a pleasure to have you along.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to our recent whānau survey. It was heartening to hear that most of our tamariki are thriving in their wellbeing and showing steady or strong progress in their learning. Many of you spoke about the caring, supportive nature of our staff, our open communication, and the inclusive, family feel that makes Carlton such a special place.
You also highlighted priorities such as health and hauora, academic progress, and social development - all of which align closely with our school vision. We were especially proud to see the positive feedback around our integration of Te Ao Māori and the way we celebrate cultural identity across our school.
A few thoughtful suggestions including ideas for improving pedestrian safety, or exploring a bike track will help guide our next steps. Ngā mihi nui for your partnership and trust as we continue to support your child’s learning journey.
The Carlton Avenue drop-off bay continues to work well. Thank you for keeping things moving smoothly and safely. Please remember that the Churchill Crescent gates are for pedestrian access only unless you display a mobility sticker.
We’ll be holding our school athletics day at Cooks Gardens on Tuesday 11th November. All students will be involved, and whānau are warmly encouraged to come along and support. More details to follow soon.
On the 17th and 18th November we are holding two afternoons of parent/whanau/teacher catch ups. These meetings will give us a chance to reflect on your child’s progress and revisit the Your Child Through Your Eyes goals set earlier in the year. Sessions will run from 3.15–6.00pm. Bookings will be open closer to the time and are made using the @school parent app.
The New Zealand Shake Out was held at school on Thursday morning. All classes spent some time learning about earthquakes and how we can prepare for an emergency. The kids were great, and hopefully shared something at home with you. This is a good reminder that we all need to be prepared for disaster situations.
We’re looking forward to celebrating Diwali together on Monday. Whānau are warmly invited to join us for a shared lunch and festivities at school. Just bring your lunch and come along at 12.45pm.
If you have any concerns or queries I can be contacted at 0278562962 or gjohnston@welearn.school.nz . Additionally, all our teachers can be contacted through their work emails, which are available on our school website.
