Inclusion 1 on 1 Aide & Inclusion Site Aide
CARD's Inclusion Program is here to help everyone play! We work to ensure equal access to our recreation programs - such as classes, sports, swim lessons, after school programs, camps, and more - to individuals in the community with special needs. Through our partnership with Far Northern Regional Center, we are able to offer 1:1 Inclusion Aides to assist program participants who benefit from a little extra support to succeed.
Inclusion 1 on 1 Aide
Participants in need of reasonable accommodations must register for an activity or program and submit a completed Accommodation Request Form no later than four (4) weeks before the start date of an activity or program. Reasonable accommodations for qualified participants are determined by individual need, programmatic elements, and staff competencies. The Accommodation Request Form will be evaluated by CARD's Inclusion Team, and you will be contacted to determine next steps.
If a participant in your program is approved to receive 1-1 assistance, they will be assigned an Inclusion Aide. If an Inclusion Aide is placed with a participant in your program, you will be notified about the placement and will receive an Inclusion Participation Notification that will include the following information:
Participant information
Program name and dates
Pertinent intake information
Assigned Aide with contact information
CARD point of contact
Plan if participant is absent
Inclusion Site Aide
They are part of the team! Make them feel welcome as part of your team and treat them like you would any coach at your site!
Inclusion Site Aide will attend camp meetings: add them to your staff distribution lists and methods of communication.
Give them a walkie talkie and make sure they know you are available to support them (even for personal reasons like using the restroom).
Erin and Inclusion Coordinator may both give the Inclusion Aide instruction on how to work with the participant and within the program. If camp staff ever have concerns, please contact the Inclusion Coordinator or Supervisor.
The Inclusion Aide will communicate all behavior issues with the participant’s family, as well as through Participant Behavior Tracking. Depending on severity of behaviors, the Site Supervisor or Inclusion Coordinator and Supervisor may be involved.
Water & Site Safety at Chapman Splash Pad
Remind participants prior that they should bring a swimsuit/clothes that can get wet, shoes that can get wet, and a towel.
Before heading outside:
Review the Splash Pad Rules with the participants:
WALKing feet at all times
No climbing on the bear
Shoes stay on our feet
No drinking the water
When you hear “[Little Hoopsters/Kickers/All Stars], water break!” go straight to a coach
Remind participants to put on sunscreen
Collect towels/water bottles in the wagon
Put on orange identifiable jerseys
While outside:
Always know the FACE COUNT
Position yourself around the play areas, separated from other coaches and never with your back to the kids.
Every 30 minutes, call for a 15 minute water break and walk the participants inside to reapply sunscreen, get water/snack, and use the restroom.
Take a Breath
To ensure the safety of the program, it is necessary to establish behavior expectations with the children. Setting players up for success is OUR responsibility. Reviewing the behavior expectations with the players regularly, praising positive behaviors daily, and giving attention when they are meeting expectations will create a positive environment that encourages the players to display positive behavior.
Take a Breath (For 5-7 year olds)
When a players is displaying inappropriate or negative behavior (after trying to redirect their focus), coaches will give the player the option to "take a breath". All camps will have a designated area (where they can be supervised) where players can go to re-focus and return when they are ready. Players can choose to just sit out if they prefer.
This is a time for players to self reflect and self evaluate. Directors need to be informed by coaches when players are sent to the "Take a Breath" area. Directors will check in and help determine if they are fit to return to the group or if further actions need to be taken.
