When you adopt or sponsor whole a hive
Picture, updates, and reports
We keep you in the loop and connected to your hive with pictures, updates, and regular hive reports. You will know the struggles and triumphs of your hive as it goes through the seasons. In some cases it may be possible to connect you to the live camera footage from the apiary or the actual hive.
Honey
If yours is a hive that makes a surplus of honey we may harvest it so that it does not be come a liability for the colony. If this happens we will share some of the sweet rewards with you.
In addition when you ADOPT a hive
Dedicate Your Hive
You can dedicate a hive as a wedding, naming, birthday gift, graduation gift, or in commemoration.
When you adopt a hive you have the option of dedicating it as a commemorative hive. This creates a living tribute and is a unique way to honor and celebrate a loved one, recognize a significant event, or support a cause.
More Sweet Rewards
In years when your hive makes a surplus of honey you will receive a larger portion of the harvest. We will bottle and label your honey with the year of harvest.
There are three hive types that need your support.
The hives at the sanctuary sites are rescued bees. We bring them to as safe space to heal the colony and regroup. We give them everything they need to thrive with ongoing care.
Once they are established we evaluate them for certain traits and characteristics. If they exhibit these then we move them to a breeding apiary.
If they don't qualify for our breeding programs we continue to house them and care for them at a sanctuary site.
The materials cost to maintain these hives is around $200/year. As our sanctuary sites grow we often bring in our trained beekeepers to help manage all the colonies. For most of our sites this cost breaks down to about $100/hive/year
The purpose of our evolution program is to use Mendelian style genetics push the envelope on helping bees adapt and evolve at a pace that keeps up with our rapidly changing world. Our goal is to have bees thriving into the future with us.
Once a colony qualifies for our breeding program they are relocated to a breeding apiary, The hives here are equally well cared for but the management becomes much more intensive. They have a heavier resource usage and therefore the cost of keeping these hives going has a materials cost of around $300/year. The effort involved in managing and breeding these bees is significant. We often bring in advanced level beekeepers to help in this. It takes around $200/hive/year to keep these hives strong, thriving, and reproducing.
Our public space hives are wonderful ambassadors and contribute to the communities where they are located.
We often use them for outreach programs and for youth clubs and to contribute to area food banks and panties.
These hives are dispersed throughout the grater DMV. Caring for these hives takes a lot of travel time and additional coordination and labor. Though the materials cost is around $200/year the labor cost run about $400/year per hive.
About One Time Costs
In addition to the annual costs there are initial set-up costs. The cost of our preferred complete hive configuration is around $400 Then in order to maximize the value of each hive as a data point with our ongoing research and to contribute to national and regional honeybee surveys we have developed and install hive monitoring equipment including hive scale, hydrothermal sensors, activity counters, and we will start installing hive cameras in select hives in 2025. The cost of all this amazing equipment is $200

Bees need help. In our region there are almost not feral colonies left. Almost all the hives that are helping provide our favorite foods are managed colonies.
