Follow Cantabo in your imagination more than a millennium back in time. The monks in the abbey prepare for monastic prayers. They begin the day before sunrise with Matins and close the evening with Compline. The cantor will teach you the chants in a way that is pleasant to listen to and to sing yourself, but which is also historically justified. We finish in style with an abbey beer in hand.
The Benedictine monks already knew that singing and drinking were a match made in heaven twelve centuries ago. The first mention of a malt house and brewery within the walls of an abbey dates back to 820 CE. Although the recipes of the Belgian Trappist beers are of a more recent date, they come from a rich history.
Around the same period, monks also wrote and illustrated cantatoria, the very first "hymnbooks". Musical notation did not yet exist, so the cantores wrote "neumes" as reminders above the text. Many scholars today want to take on the challenge of interpreting Gregorian chant from these oldest known sources.
This accessible workshop lasts 2 to 2.5 hours, including tasting. No prior knowledge is required. The participants receive royalty-free scores that they can keep. The workshop is a pleasant change between history, Gregorian music notation and performance, singing together and tasting different types of Trappist beer. Available in Dutch and English.
This film reflects the atmosphere of the first workshop 'Sing like a Trappist', which Cantabo gave in the Antwerp Saint Paul's Church as part of the World Choir Games.
