The Birmingham Mainline Canal (BCM) is a 15 Mile main line canal running from Wolverhampton to Birmingham and linking to many of the canals in Birmingham and The Black Country. The Birmingham Mainline begins at Aldersley Junction near Wolverhampton where it meets with the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal not to far from Autherley Junction where the Staffs and Worc meets the Shropshire Union Canal. The BCM climbs a series of locks and passes Wolverhampton City Centre before heading out and meeting the Wyrley and Essington Canal at Horseley Fields Junction. The BCM continues to Coseley passing underneath through The Coseley Tunnel (One of two tunnels on the BCM) and heading to Tipton. In Tipton the BCM meets the Old Mainline Canal and then lowers itself by going down three locks, these are the last locks on the BCM when heading towards Birmingham. The BCM now passes through towards Smethwick, meeting with the Netherton Tunnel Branch, Gower Branch, Walsall Canal and then once again the Old Mainline. The BCM enters a picturesque valley at Smethwick passing under the Engine Arm and then the impressive Smethwick Galton Bridge, and then under its second tunnel, the Old Mainline also rejoins the BCM in this area. The BCM continues towards Brum passing the Soho Loop and meets with the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal in Birmingham City Centre at Brindley Place outside the NIA and National Sea Life Centre. The BCM then passes a number of bars and restaurants and the ICC at Brindley Place until it meets the Grand Union Canal at Gas Street Basins just beyond Broad Street.
WALKING THE BIRMINGHAM MAINLINE CANAL (PART 1)
I start my walk along the towpath of the Birmingham Mainline Canal at Aldersley Junction (Where the BCM meets the Staffs and Worcester Canal) and walk to Horseley Fields Junction (Where the BCM meets the Wyrley and Essington Canal), passing up Wolverhampton's 21 locks and leaving the canal for a walk around Wolverhampton.
WALKING THE BIRMINGHAM MAINLINE CANAL (PART 2)
I continue my walk along the towpath of the Birmingham Mainline Canal from Horseley Fields Junction where the canal meets the Wyrley and Essington along the towpath to Deepfields Junction where we meet with the Bradley Arm Canal. Heading near the town of Bilston along the way.
WALKING THE BIRMINGHAM MAINLINE CANAL (PART 3)
Continuing my walk along the towpath of the Birmingham Mainline Canal from Bradley Junction (Where the BCM meets the Bradley Arm Canal) to Tipton Junction (Where the BCM meets the Old Mainline Canal), with a short towpath diversion to contend with, this journey passes through The Coseley Tunnel, but also walks some of the National Cycle Route 81 route that leaves the canal to avoid the tunnel.
WALKING THE BIRMINGHAM MAINLINE CANAL (PART 4)
Part four of my walk along the towpath of the BCM. Starting at Factory Junction where the Mainline meets the Old Mainline and heading to Albion Junction where the Mainline meets The Gower Branch Canal. This walk takes me down Tipton Locks, before passing Owen Street, Tiptons shopping area. A short walk along the towpath and we arrive at Victoria Park, then after passing over a few aqueducts arrive at Dudley Port Junction where the BCM meets with the Netherton Tunnel Branch Canal. Shortly after arriving at Albion Junction. Also along the way we explore two tunnels, one leading on to Sheepwash Nature Reserve,
WALKING THE BIRMINGHAM MAINLINE CANAL (PART 5)
The fifth part of my walk along the full length of the BCM towpath. Starting at Albion Junction and continuing to Smethwick Junction, firstly passing Pudding Green Junction where the Walsall Canal meets the Mainline, then on to Bromford Junction where the Spon Lane Locks take you up to the Old Mainline, we continue along the new Mainline and pass under the M5 and under the Old Mainline at Stewards Aqueduct, before passing into Galton Valley, passing Smethwick Galton Bridge, Smethwick Pumping Station and the Engine Arm Aqueduct, some impressive canal structures all in one short space of towpath. Finishing this section at Smethwick Junction where the Old Mainline meets up again.
WALKING THE BIRMINGHAM MAINLINE CANAL (PART 6)
The Final part of my walk along the towpath of the Birmingham Mainline Canal. Starting at Smethwick Junction and continuing to the canals end at Gas Street Basins. This walk takes us past the Soho Loop and into the City Centre of Birmingham to Old Turn Junction to meet the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal and into Brindley Place, Broad Street where we leave for a quick visit of Centenary Square.
