Camas Valley Students Learn Life Lessons and Find Success at County Fair

Camas Valley FFA had a great time at the Douglas County Fair!  Though we only had two students showing in FFA (Julie Amos - beef, and Katelynn Simpson - market and breeding goats), and one with an education display (Clarissa Fowler), we still had a good showing for our small school.

Participating in projects at the fair teaches students so many skills and life lessons!  They learn to care for an animal, take responsibility for something, how to win and lose graciously, and learn about the food they eat.

The Douglas County Fair ran August 5-10th.  Tuesday was the market steer show.  Wednesday, the fair opened to the public and we had the meat goat show and beef showmanship.  Thursday we had a member on the radio talking about the auction, and Clarissa, the Umpqua FFA District Sentinel came to announce some shows! Friday was the Livestock Judging contest and FFA Awards Ceremony, and Senior Salute in the evening. Saturday was the Rotary Auction!

Here are some highlights from the week!

• Julie placed a respectable 5th in her heavyweight class with her Douglas County born steer!

• Julie placed 4th in her beef showmanship class!

• Katelynn was 5th in her market goat class!

• Katelynn’s Doe won her senior Doe class, then won champion Boer female, came back for the supreme female drive and ended up reserve supreme female!

• Katelynn was also reserve champion beginning showman and made it to the final drive!

• Clarissa found out she won her class for her educational display. Then she rocked it out announcing for the poultry and sheep shows. 

• Katelynn was also on the radio talking about her market goats and the auction!

• Julie and Katelynn sold their steer and goat, respectively, in the auction!

Some Camas Valley students participated in fair through 4H, and they all had respectable showings in their areas as well!  Thank you to all the supporters who show up for our students either at their shows or to buy their animals at the auction!
