ROADRUNNER DIVISION 7
The former Silver City, NM, depot was scratchbuilt by Myke Bruessel based upon several photographs. The prototype structure stood in Silver City from 1915-75.
We have been a busy little division since our October report. We visited five Las Cruces layouts for one of our meetings, visited a local N scale club for another meeting, and even ventured to El Paso for a meeting and layout visit at the Superintendent’s home.
Here are a few tidbits compiled from the last six meeting reports on our division blog - http://nmraroadrunner.blogspot.com/.
Monthly meetings - 6
Total attendance - 91, with many members attending more than one meeting
Layout visits - 7
Contests - 1
Models displayed - 56
Tips and techniques discussed - 30
Lynn Daugherty displayed this ore bin for his Sn3 layout. He is building it from a Classic Miniatures kit but Lynn has built the chutes as functioning components.
Roadrunner Division meetings are informal affairs that feature member discussions on upcoming local events, local railroad activity, and sharing tips and techniques in regard to the models brought in for display. Any member who brings a model for display is asked to make a short presentation on their efforts. Members ask questions about the completed works and make suggestions for the next steps to take on unfinished works. Each 5 to 10-minute model discussion is a mini-clinic of valuable information covering prototype detail, build methods, finishing, and weathering.
Phil Wiborg often displays larger scale mechanical models that he has built. Many are scratch-built but this operating compressed air engine started as a kit.
Contest
Our division holds a couple of contests each year with a topic or theme approved by the membership. We have seen layout designs, weathering, scratch built sheds, and many other items submitted in the contests. This fall, our members were encouraged to build a model that exhibits a sense of levity or humor. Three entries were judged in November and here they are:
Ralph Troeller captured first place with his 'Sweaty Betty’s Diner' diorama.
Ralph Troeller struck again for second place with his 'Santa Takes a Break Before His Big Night' diorama.
Mike Weiss took third place with his 'Levit TV building' with scratch-built TV antennas.
Layout Tour
Our April meeting was a tour of five Las Cruces home layouts. There was quite a variety with two N scale, two HO scale, and a two-rail O scale layout open for inspection.
The tour group is enthralled at John Dowalgo’s O scale switching layout. This L-shaped layout reflects a New Haven branch set in the early 1960s.
Next Stops!
Our next contest entries are due in May! Members were encouraged to build either a 144 square inch diorama, or a model, in a scale other than their primary scale.
We meet on the second Saturday of each month to share ideas, techniques, and a few laughs. All Rocky Mountain Region members are invited to drop in when you are visiting Las Cruces, NM.
