RIO GRANDE - DIVISION 6
The year of 2014 for Rio Grande Division 6 started with a new slate of Officers. Bill Sedivec retired as Superintendent, after serving the Division for over 7 years, and the new Superintendent is Buzz Lenander. Bill railroaded Buzz into being the new "Super" by letting him run his Union Pacific trains on his beautiful layout. And no one else was jumping up and down to take the job.
Retiring Secretary Lynn Garrison turned over her quill pen to new Secretary Charlie Baker, after a number of years recording the minutes for the Division. Stan Kravitz, Treasurer for several years,
handed over the books to new Treasurer Sandy Savage.
Al Hovey retired as Program Chairman after a number of years of providing some excellent programs for the membership, and the new Program Chairman is Dave Turner.
All of the retiring Officers are to be commended for their many years of service to the Division!
Kent Shelton has accepted the position as the new Membership Chairman. Other positions in the Division include; Webmaster Mike Hadaway, Flyers and Publications Jeff Wright, Certificate Designer and Printer Scott Haycock, AP Chairman Allan Phillips, Boy Scout Coordinator Blaine Bachman, and 2014 Rails Along the Rio Grande Train Show Coordinators Al Hovey, Jim Billian, Pat Hepburn, and Jack Dietz.
Rio Grande Division 6 meetings are held the second Saturday of the odd numbered months. The program for the January meeting was presented by Rich Virgin, on "Developing a Data Base of Freight Cars for the Era You Model", concentrating on the D & RGW RR in Colorado in the 1960's. It was very interesting.
For the March program, Dave Traudt produced a slide show of the Railroads in New Mexico, the Steam Era, from the late 1880's through the early 1970's, with many never before seen photographs. Also very interesting.
The meeting for May falls on National Train Day, May 10th, and members will be participating in the Train Show at the Wheels Museum, in the old Santa Fe Warehouse; and at the Alvarado Transportation Center, with layouts and displays.
Last Fall the Division started the Rio Grande Division Youth Club, for boys and girls ages 8 - 18, with as many as 8 kids participating. Activities have included basic terminology and scenery skills. They have also visited and run trains on three home layouts. They have started building "Pizza" layouts (on a 24" diameter piece of foam) with themes relating to New Mexico. They will display their layouts at National Train Day.
Members who have helped with the Youth Club include: Al Hovey, Lynn Garrison, Joe Rogers, Charlie Baker, Dave Turner, Rich Virgin, Pat Hepburn, Mike Hadaway, Joe Filbark, Sheron Kravitz, and Buzz Lenander.
The big event for the year will be the "Rails Along Rio Grande 2014 TRAIN SHOW" to be held November 15-16.
