After large rain events, rivers tend to see sudden increases in stream stage (height) and velocity that can lead to flooding and heavily-eroded river banks14. Because of this risk, it is important to implement practices along the river that will help to mitigate against these occurrences.

Managing a shoreline along the Winooski River may not be as clear as other types of shorelines described in this guide. Some sections of the river may have shorelines with features of sandy beach, wetlands, lawns, or agricultural land. To best manage these shorelines along the river, we have included multiple redevelopment improvements that will help your shoreline withstand highly erosive events. However, due to the variability of shoreline along the river, we suggest that you also refer to other shoreline sections in this guide that may be more similar to the shoreline along your property; for example, if your shoreline along the river is located on agricultural land, you may want to refer to the Agriculture section for supplementary information regarding implementing management improvements.
