SHORELINE TYPES

Background

Burlington has a dynamic and diverse shoreline with 25 miles of waterfront located along Lake Champlain and the Winooski River. North Beach, Rock Point, and The Intervale are popular public outdoor spaces that promote recreation, agriculture, and ecological relationships. Beyond aesthetic and recreational value, the Burlington waterfront provides valuable habitat for a variety of wildlife, including Great Blue Herons, Mink, and Painted Turtles.

One can find a variety of different features and ecosystems along the Burlington shoreline, depending on location. Some areas are rocky cliffs with beautiful Adirondack views, while others are fertile flood-prone agricultural land. When referring to the shoreline, it is best to consider the 50ft buffer from water, moving inland.

These shoreline type summaries are intended to help shoreline property owners and managers identify their property ecosystem while suggesting a range of recommendations for improving and preserving shoreline health.
