British Society for Phenomenology, Lived Experience in Theory & in Practice

SPEAKERS - ADVICE

Speakers, thank you for choosing to present your research at the British Society for Phenomenology 2023 Annual UK Conference: ‘Lived Experience in Theory and in Practice’ (29-31 August - In Person), convened with the Department of History, Politics and Philosophy, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK.

We have selected around 35 speakers for the conference from the abstract submissions during our call for papers. The review team were really impressed by the submissions overall. The abstracts selected promise to give us a very diverse, research-rich event, and we look forward to hosting your presentations as part of the conference.

Format

This year the conference is an in-person event, for all attendees, both speakers and delegates. This means all the papers will be delivered in person and to audiences at Manchester. The conference takes place over three days and will be organised into themed panels across two parallel tracks.

Presentations should be 20 minutes with time after each paper for Q&As. ADDENDUM 8/8/2023: Speaker slots will be 45 minutes to allow more time for questions and answers, and also accommodate any presentations lasting slightly longer than 20 minutes.

There are a PC, a projector, and a screen in both rooms. As is usual with academic events, PowerPoint presentations should be brought on USB. Please do not expect to be able to download your PowerPoint from emails, online clouds etc. during the panel. Please try to ensure your PowerPoint is accessible. Here are some tips for creating an accessible PowerPoint.

All presenters have the option to have their presentations audio recorded to be considered for release as a weekly episode of the BSP Podcast. We will discuss this with you at and after the event.

Speaker Registration – by 31 July 2023

The conference fee this year begins at £150 for early bird registration. Early bird registration ends 31 July 2023.

Speaker registration is required during the early bird period in order to facilitate organising, timetabling, and promoting the event. Accordingly, all speakers should register before 31 July at the latest.

To attend BSP events, speakers and delegates need to be members of the British Society for Phenomenology. If you are not already a member, membership (full and discounted, £40 and £20 respectively) will be added to the conference fee. When you become a member, you receive access to the Journal of the British Society for Phenomenology online for one year. JBSP Online publishes around 25 new research articles a year, and membership includes access to 50+ years of the JBSP. You can become a member at any time, for more information please visit our membership page.

The registration fee includes morning and afternoon refreshments and lunch (vegetarian and vegan options), as well as Wi-Fi access. The registration does not include accommodation and travel. There will be a conference meal on the evening of day 2 of the conference. This is optional and can be paid for during the registration process.

Financial assistance

Financial assistance is on offer during early bird registration for speakers: attendance assistance is open to student, early career researchers (ECRs), unwaged, low relative income speakers; there is also assistance for speakers with child care needs. There is also the BSP President's discretionary bursary. Under exceptional circumstances, a significant bursary may be offered upon application.
