Reading Website (30%)
We will together construct a website of helpful resources. Each reading group will be responsible for creating a resource based on a section of the book. This website will serve as a class resource in you work as an elementary teacher
In Class Assignments (20%)
Reflections, worksheets, & group activities
Math Problems and Homework (30%)
Most days you will be assigned 2-3 math problems. You must come to class with individual work completed. In class you will be partnered with a group to develop a final group answer to the math problems. Class reflections to be turned into the iCollege website as a group. You will also submit one project: letter to Teacher/Parent, which you will construct after interviewing a child.
Weekly Reflection Activities (40%)
You will be assigned weekly reflection questions based on the readings, videos, field placements, or other course content. These reflections will be completed on ICollege and assessed based on their thoughtful completion. You should have access to your responses during each class session for discussion purposes. In addition to the reflection questions, each week may contain one of the following activities:
Some weeks, you will be assigned a math problem. You will work on the problem alone and submit your individually written solution on ICollege prior to class. You will be assessed on correctness, quality of mathematical reasoning, and your use of visualizations. During class, you may be asked to work in groups to collaboratively develop a response to the problem.
Some weeks there will be questions to answer within a Moodle discussion, where you will submit your answers and then comment on classmates’ posts.
Professional Learning Community (PLC) Video Lessons and Feedback (40%)
Each student will design a lesson covering a subject covered in class. The lesson will be designed for their placement classrooms and taught in that classroom. The student will video tape their lesson and upload the lesson into iCollege discussion assigned to them. For the weeks students aren’t teaching, they will be expected to give thoughtful feedback on their peer’s lessons and collaborate in the class reflections.
Assess Teach Assess Project (20%)
During your placement, you will interview two students about their mathematical knowledge, teach a lesson, and then re-interview those same students. You will carefully analyze what students know and what they learn during your lesson. This lesson may be taught individually or with placement peers.
Summative Assessment Project (20%)
This project will involve careful analysis of actual classroom summative assessments used in your class. You will analyze an actual summative assessment, create evaluation criteria, grade a set of student papers, practice writing student feedback, and analyze the results.
Final Exam (20%)
The final exam will refer to lecture material and the required readings from 6390, 6391, and 6392. The best way to prepare for this exams is to participate actively in class and actively participate in completing the group homework assignments. These assignments are, in some ways, a pretest. The homework is an excellent study guide for the team, and a more general exam study guide will also be available.
