At the end of this course, the learner will be able to define what a literature review is?
At the end of this course, the learner will be able to explain what a coding form is used for?
At the end of this course, the learner will describe what makes a "good" literature review?
A literature review takes a critical inspection of academic articles, books, conference proceedings, dissertations, or magazine articles about a specific topic. Literature reviews analyze and synthesize the collection of sources gathered from experts in the field. The researcher reveals themes, existing knowledge, debates, and gaps on the topic of research in order to inform their own research questions and goals (Salkind, 2019).
The title of my literature review: To What Degree Does the Guided Discovery Learning Principle and Computer Simulations have on Student Learning Outcomes?
My goal in researching the role of the guided discovery learning principle was to find what amount of guidance and from where (the teacher or embedded inside the simulation) is needed to enhance student learning. There are many articles that supported the guided discovery learning principle, but there was a lot of debate about the level of guidance needed. Further research is needed to find out where the technology will lead this discussion.
Keywords: guided discovery learning, computer-based simulations, scaffolds, multimedia learning, cognitive learning
Example of a simulation from the Colorado Art and Sciences Magazine.
Coding forms are spreadsheets or tables that are created to organize the literature that is collected for research. Organizing is paramount when conducting research. Coding forms create a space for researchers to categorize their research articles and other sources. Some examples of categories are:
Citations
Abstracts
Theoretical frameworks
Themes
Patterns
Big Picture Ideas

Good literature reviews should have these elements:
Theoretical framework (which is the foundation of the theory that guides the research).
Methods (this section explains how the research was conducted).
What type of research was used, qualitative or quantitative? A hypothesis, the participants, instruments used, and the procedure used.
Results of the research (which should include the data).
Discussion (the implications of the research findings).
Conclusion (steps forward and recommendations).
What is a literature review?
What are coding forms designed to do? Create a coding form in Google Sheets, then label the important categories.
What are the elements that make up a "good" literature review?
