Hello, Members of the Board,
This website is a culmination of the evaluations that have taken place for six weeks. The two Learning Management Systems (LMS) that were analyzed are D2L Brightspace and Google Classroom. The evaluations were commissioned by the executive board. The following information is intended to assist in the adoption process of a new LMS:
LMS Final Recommendation
Quality Matters (QM) Recommendation
Evaluator Background
My final recommendation is D2L Brightspace. It is by far the most in-depth of the two LMS.
D2L Brightspace has the most robust customization capabilities such as the ability to add or delete widgets.
The Media Capture feature allows designers to record an audio message in "real-time" which is a beneficial accessibility option.
Accessibility needs are also addressed with the "Differentiated Release Conditions" tool that allows instructors to adapt the due date and time for individuals or small groups.
The online "Just in Time" (JIT) tutorials from Brightspace are located on YouTube and provide instructors with step-by-step instructions. There are 340 videos.
Collaborate Ultra is a conference tool in D2L that gives students and instructors the agency to communicate effectively in a synchronous class setting.
Seemless creation of "Demo" student to view your course from a student's view.
An assigned account manager for your institution.
"BEHIND THE SCENES"
D2L Brightspace remains one of the top four Learning Management Systems for Higher Education (PCmag.com, 2018). According to PCmag.com, "Thirteen percent of the new university and college adopters rely on D2L LMS."
Quality Matters, a global organization sets the standard for online and blended learning.
Quality assurance is guided by four underlying principles:
Continuous (consistent alignment)
Centered (standardized)
Collegial (institution and program collaboration)
Collaborative (peer-reviewed)
I highly recommend our organization adopt the QM's tools and resources for online teaching as a trial. This package focuses on course delivery, support for faculty readiness, and learner readiness. There are two other levels of certification that can be purchased, Course Certification and Program Certification. However, the QM Teaching Online Certificate (seven workshops) as professional development would prepare our faculty for the rigor and depth of online teaching readiness.
It is my professional recommendation that our organization should:
Make a presentation to our faculty about Quality Matters certification.
Create a "Dream Team" of early adopters (volunteers) to go through the QM Teaching Online Certificate training.
Discuss the possibility of adopting the QM Course Certification and/or the Program Certification after the early adopters complete QM Online Certificate Training. The early adopters can report out to the faculty and the Board.
Meet to discuss the cost of each QM piece after QM Certificate Training.
Executive Board members,
I recently successfully completed the Independent Applying the QM Rubric (APPQMR): (Statewide Systems) course. I am currently taking classes to earn a second Master's in Instructional Design from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. I have worked as a Library Media Specialist (K12) for over 13 years. I currently work at Stivers School for the Arts, Dayton Public Schools.
My future plans are to conduct professional development sessions for my district in addition to working at the school level.
Thank you for your consideration,
Casaundra Bronner
