I serve as a reviewer for numerous academic journals, including Review of Higher Education, Journal of College Student Development, Community College Journal of Research and Practice, Autism, Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, and Community College Review. Additionally, I have been a proposal reviewer for academic conferences, including the Council for the Study of Community Colleges and the Association for the Study of Higher Education. I served on the Association for the Study of Higher Education 2024 Conference Program Committee as a Section co-chair. Also I served as the conference co-chair for the Council for the Study of Community Colleges (CSCC) 2023 Conference. I am now on CSCC's Board as a Board Member-at-Large.
For my first three years in graduate school I served on the board of the ELPA LEADS graduate student organization in our department. During this time I organized and facilitated a number of professional development events related to networking, publishing, and navigating graduate school. I also created orientation programming for prospective and incoming graduate students, ranging from a university tour to socials. In my third year I served as ELPA LEADS' president, and we held our highest number of events to date.
For seven years I served in a variety of roles for The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, whether as a Student Vice President for Arizona State University (2013-15) and UW-Madison (2015-present), a Council of Student West Region Rep (2014-16), or the Graduate Student Representative on the National Board of Directors (2018-2020). Major efforts I have led included enhancing social media presence and activities and spearheading programming at the biennial Student Leadership Summit.
During Summer 2016 I volunteered with the Madison Trust for Historical Preservation, in which I offered free architectural history guided tours of State Street and the Bascom Mall area of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Over my college career I volunteered as a mentor in a variety of roles, ranging from guiding new volunteers and hosting orientation sessions at the Arizona Animal Welfare League (2011-2015), to meeting with new and prospective graduate students in the Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis department at UW-Madison. I always find value in supporting individuals who are in new life situations carve out meaningful paths and experiences.
In more recent years, this mentorship role has extended to guiding incoming and current graduate students, both at my main institution and at other instituions.Â
Several roles defined my identity as a student leader, all stemming during my formative years as an undergraduate student leader. At Scottsdale Community College I led our campus environmental club and served as Editor in Chief of the Scottsdale Chronicle Newspaper. Most significant was presiding over our Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society chapter (see picture above with fellow student leaders), in which we staged many major college events, including an awareness event of a newly smoke-free campus initiative and documentary screenings. Later, at Arizona State University, I headed a chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America chapter, enlisting a number of professionals to speak at campus events. In starting and running the Supporting, Welcoming and Assisting Transfers (SWAT) organization through Barrett, The Honors College, my team and I provided resources to prospective and incoming honors students from AZ community colleges, as well as hosted professional development events and socials.
