The communication protocol for the boat control app is Bluetooth Low Energy because of it's low profile and you guessed it, low energy consumption. Furthermore using WiFi was an option but it would block phones from connecting to 4G or other WiFi hotspots at the same time. Using bluetooth prevents this issue as you can connect to multiple bluetooth devices at the same time and still be able to connect to WiFi.
