John Dewey

Progressive Education

John Dewey is one of the most influencial thinker in the history of modern educational theory. Deweys ideas and approaches to schooling were revolutionary ideas during his lifetime and it still remians important in schooling today. Dewey is best known for his role in what is called Progressive Edcuation- it is a view of education that emphasizes the need to learn by doing. Deweys believes that people learn best through a "hands-on" approach, Through practical and active learning experiences children will learn more sufficently and effectively. From a educational point of view he believes students must interact with their environmental surroundings in order to adapt and learn. "knowledge comes from the impressions made upon us by natural objects". In the Classroom Dewey says its important for teachers and learners to work hand in hand and learn together, teachers need to be facilitators rather than dictators. Dewey sees the classroom as needing to be as such a "miniature community" as this will help children to turn into socially responsible people as this is the key to social progression. Dewey is truly a learner-centered approach to focus on the present interest of a child and us this as a tool to educate the child using the childs own interets. Dewey belives that children should be allowed to freely move in and out of classrooms in order to pursue their own interets allowing them to follow their own chosen paths for acquiring and applying knowledge.
