Biochemistry and Pathogenesis of Microbes (BPM) Research Group
With a passion for exploring diverse aspects of microbial biochemistry, ecophysiology, and pathogenesis, my research focuses on investigating the metabolic, probiotic, and pathogenic activities of microorganisms and microinvertebrates, their physiology, and their contributions to biogeochemical carbon recycling. A major component of this work also centers on food microbiology and food biochemistry, particularly the study of fermented foods, dairy beverages, and food-derived lactic acid bacteria as sources of probiotic and functional properties. During my academic journey, I had the privilege of pursuing a Ph.D. in the Glycometabolome Lab under the guidance of Dr. Tadashi Suzuki at RIKEN, Japan, a transformative experience that sparked my fascination with microbial protein glycosylation and glycoprotein catabolic pathways.
As an Associate Professor, I am committed to education beyond my specialized research areas. I teach courses in basic microbiology, spectroscopy, endocrinology, and related subjects at the Bachelor's and Master's levels. I am also actively involved in supervising undergraduate, MS, and PhD thesis research, and serve as a thesis reviewer and examiner.
In my research, I study probiotics, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria, lactic acid bacteria, zoonotic pathogens, and glycan-modifying enzymes in bacteria and fungi. This includes developing evidence-based approaches for functional foods, probiotic formulations, and microbe-driven food preservation strategies that bridge traditional knowledge with modern biotechnology. These investigations provide insights into microbial functions, metabolic activities, ecophysiology, and pathogenesis, enhancing our understanding of their roles across diverse ecosystems. I have also contributed to the development of health-promoting, One Health-oriented probiotic formulations with potential applications in human, animal, and environmental health.
Throughout my career, I have participated in multidisciplinary projects involving beneficial and pathogenic microbes, focusing on genomics, metabolomics, bioinformatics, and biotransformation. I have also conducted research on glycan catabolism in yeasts, unraveling complex microbial processes. My broader research focus includes food-associated microbial communities, bioactive metabolites from fermented sources, and lactic acid bacteria relevant to food quality, preservation, and nutrition. I value continuous learning and embrace opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and mentorship. Driven by a strong commitment to advancing biochemistry and microbiology, I am dedicated to guiding aspiring researchers, fostering collaborations, and exploring new frontiers in microbial science while contributing to innovation and knowledge advancement.
