About the Jr. Livestock Sale Scholarship

The Boulder County Jr. Livestock Sale Committee is proud to offer multiple scholarships to support 4-H & FFA Exhibitors continuing their education at a college, university, or trade school. These scholarships recognize the hard work and dedication of youth who have participated in the Boulder County Junior Livestock Sale.

The Jerry Hergenreder Memorial Scholarship 

Jerry “Big Jer” Hergenreder was born and raised east of Longmont, Colorado, and graduated from Longmont High School in 1976. He spent his life farming the land he grew up on—first with his father and later alongside his sons. Today, his sons continue that tradition, raising the fifth generation and honoring Jerry’s deep commitment to agriculture and family. Known throughout the neighborhood for his warm presence and signature overalls, Big Jer left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

In addition to farming, Jerry had a lifelong love of music. A trombone player from fifth grade on, he performed professionally from high school through adulthood. At the time of his passing, Jerry played with the River Boys polka band, performing across Colorado and Nebraska, with career highlights including performances at the Kennedy Center and the Library of Congress.

Jerry’s family proudly honors his legacy by supporting the agricultural community through a 4-H or FFA exhibitor scholarship. His wife, Trish, and extended family deeply miss him.

Livestock Sale Scholarships

The Livestock Sale Committee has provided post-secondary and college scholarship opportunities to Boulder County exhibitors who are enrolled in market projects and meet the application guidelines. New this year, we are pleased to introduce a Trade School scholarship application, offering greater flexibility to support a wider range of post-secondary and career-focused educational paths. Our goal is to invest in the continued growth and success of dedicated 4-H and FFA youth who have demonstrated responsibility, leadership, and a strong commitment to agriculture and their communities.

Who Can Apply

• Graduating high school seniors or current full-time college or vocational students in their 1st year.

• Students who have sold a livestock project in the Boulder County Junior Livestock Sale for at least three years. This doesn't have to be consecutive years or in the last three years.

• Applicants must meet the minimum GPA requirement. 

How to Apply

• Complete the scholarship application and include all required materials. 

• Submit your application and supporting documents, including your recent high school, college, or vocational transcript, to jrlivestocksale.bcf@gmail.com by March 1st, 2027.

• An interview may be requested as part of the selection process.

History of the Jr. Livestock Sale Scholarship (Est. 2011)

Since 2011, the Jr. Livestock Sale Scholarship has been a proud tradition of the Livestock Sale Committee, established to honor the hard work, dedication, and accomplishments of our youth exhibitors. Over the past 15 years, the committee has awarded 54 scholarships, providing $30,700 in financial support to students pursuing higher education or vocational training.

This scholarship program reflects our ongoing commitment to investing in the future of agriculture and supporting the educational goals of 4-H and FFA participants. Each award represents not only financial assistance, but also recognition of the responsibility, perseverance, and excellence demonstrated through livestock projects.
