In July 2019, my family and I embarked on a mesmerizing journey to Spiti Valley, a place of surreal landscapes and spiritual tranquility. This trip, etched in our hearts forever, took us through some of the most breathtaking locations in Himachal Pradesh. Here’s a detailed account of our 10-day adventure.
Our trip was filled with unforgettable moments:
Witnessing the colonial charm of Shimla.
Experiencing the serenity of Sarahan’s Bhimakali Temple.
Exploring Chitkul, the last village near the Indo-Tibetan border.
Marveling at the golden sunset over Kinnaur Kailash from Kalpa.
Discovering the ancient murals of Tabo Monastery.
Driving through the lush and rugged terrain of Pin Valley.
Visiting Key Monastery, Langza, Hikkim, and Kibber in Kaza.
Being spellbound by the turquoise waters of Chandratal Lake.
Crossing iconic passes like Kunzum and Rohtang.
Our adventure began with a flight from Kolkata to Chandigarh. Excitement buzzed in the air as we touched down, ready to explore the Himalayas. The city’s charm was the perfect prelude to the journey ahead.
From Chandigarh, we drove to Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh. En route, the winding roads and lush greenery set the tone for the adventure ahead. Upon arrival, we explored the colonial-era architecture and enjoyed a relaxing evening amidst the cool mountain breeze. After a delicious Himachali dinner, we rested for the night.
The next day, we headed to Sarahan, a quaint village known as the “Gateway to Kinnaur.” Nestled amidst apple orchards and lush greenery, Sarahan charmed us with its serene beauty. We visited the Bhimakali Temple, an architectural marvel, and spent a peaceful night here.
Our journey took us to Chitkul, the last inhabited village near the Indo-Tibetan border. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and the pristine Baspa River, Chitkul felt like stepping into a postcard. The tranquility of this picturesque village left us in awe as we spent the night soaking in its beauty.
From Chitkul, we traveled to Kalpa, another gem in the Kinnaur district. The highlight of our stay was the magical sunset over the Kinnaur Kailash range. Watching the sun’s golden rays bathe the snow-clad peaks was a moment we’ll cherish forever.
On this day, we began our journey into Spiti Valley. En route to Tabo, we stopped at Nako Village, known for its serene Nako Lake surrounded by willow and poplar trees. Tabo, our destination for the night, welcomed us with its rich history. We visited the Tabo Monastery, often referred to as the “Ajanta of the Himalayas” for its ancient murals and frescoes.
As we drove from Tabo to Kaza, we detoured to explore Pin Valley, a stunning blend of lush greenery and rugged terrain. This national park is home to snow leopards and other exotic wildlife. Arriving in Kaza, we settled in for a three-night stay to explore the heart of Spiti Valley.
Kaza, the largest town in Spiti, served as our base for exploring local attractions:
Key Monastery: A spiritual haven perched on a hilltop, offering panoramic views.
Langza Village: Famous for its giant Buddha statue and fossil-rich grounds.
Hikkim: Home to the world’s highest post office.
Kibber Village: Known for its stunning landscapes and wildlife.
We immersed ourselves in the local culture, savoring traditional Spitian cuisine and enjoying the warmth of the locals.
The journey from Kaza to Keylong was nothing short of extraordinary. Crossing the Kunzum Pass, we stopped at Chandratal Lake. Its turquoise waters, surrounded by towering peaks, were mesmerizing. This enchanting place felt like a dream. Continuing to Keylong, we stayed the night amidst the serene beauty of Lahaul Valley.
On our way to Manali, we crossed the iconic Rohtang Pass. The journey was filled with dramatic landscapes and thrilling mountain roads. Reaching Manali, we indulged in leisure and shopping at Mall Road, preparing for our return journey.
Manali offered a perfect conclusion to our adventure. We visited the Hadimba Temple, explored the vibrant streets, and enjoyed some adventure activities. The cool weather and scenic beauty provided a rejuvenating experience.
Finally, we drove back to Chandigarh, reminiscing about the unforgettable journey. A flight back to Kolkata marked the end of our Spiti Valley adventure.
Spiti Valley is a land of unparalleled beauty, spiritual calm, and adventurous thrills. Each destination on our journey added a unique flavor to our experience, making it truly unforgettable. This trip not only brought us closer to nature but also strengthened our bond as a family. Spiti Valley, with its magical charm, will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
