In January 2020, my family and I set out on a mesmerizing journey to the picturesque state of Uttarakhand. This trip was a perfect blend of spirituality, adventure, and natural beauty, shared with my wife, son, and in-laws. Here’s how we planned and cherished every moment of this unforgettable adventure:
My journey began with a professional engagement at IIT Roorkee, where I attended a conference amidst the historic charm of one of India’s premier institutes. Post-conference, I was joined by my wife and son, and together we set off to Haridwar, where my in-laws were eagerly waiting for us to embark on our Uttarakhand adventure.
The day began with a visit to Patanjali Yogpeeth, a serene ashram promoting yoga and Ayurveda, followed by a stop at Kankhal, a site of historical and spiritual importance. By evening, we found ourselves at Har Ki Pauri, witnessing the enchanting Ganga Aarti. The sight of floating diyas on the sacred river, accompanied by the rhythmic chants, was mesmerizing.
Staying at Hotel New Aditya, we spent the night immersed in the spiritual ambiance of Haridwar.
We set out early, heading to the "Queen of Hills," Mussoorie, via Dehradun. The scenic drive was marked by winding roads, green valleys, and crisp mountain air.
After checking in at Hotel Highland, we visited Kempty Falls, which, though chilly in January, retained its charm. The cascading waters amidst a backdrop of greenery provided great photo opportunities and a relaxing afternoon. The night at Mussoorie was peaceful, offering a beautiful view of the star-lit mountains.
Leaving Mussoorie, we drove to Dhanaulti, a tranquil hill station blanketed in snow. Its pristine beauty left us spellbound. From there, we passed through Chamba, a picturesque town offering panoramic views of snow-covered peaks, before descending to Rishikesh.
At Hotel Indira Kunja, we rested, gearing up for the spiritual and adventurous leg of our journey.
The morning began with a stroll across the iconic Laxman Jhula, where the Ganges flows serenely below. The spiritual vibe of Rishikesh, coupled with its majestic riverfront, was both calming and energizing.
By afternoon, we journeyed to Jim Corbett National Park, reaching Corbett Panorama Resort by evening. The anticipation of encountering the wildlife kept us excited for the next day.
We woke early to the sounds of the jungle and embarked on our first safari. The dense Sal forests, open grasslands, and shimmering Ramganga River created an enchanting backdrop. While we didn’t spot a tiger, we were rewarded with sightings of deer herds, a majestic peacock, and langurs swinging through the trees.
The experience was mesmerizing, with the beauty of the forest captivating us at every turn. That evening, we stayed at the Gairal Forest House, where the sounds of the jungle surrounded us as we drifted to sleep.
Our second safari began at dawn, and luck favored us this time. Deep in the jungle, we encountered a tigress with her cubs, a regal sight that left us in awe. To our astonishment, later in the safari, we witnessed a tiger on a hunt, stalking and successfully taking down a deer. It was a humbling and unforgettable moment, showcasing the raw power and beauty of nature.
After the safari, we began our journey to Nainital. As we ascended the winding mountain roads, snow began to fall, blanketing the path in white. The drive became challenging, with icy roads testing our driver’s skills. However, the sight of Nainital under a layer of snow was worth every effort. The town resembled a winter wonderland, and after checking in at Hotel Himalaya, we spent the evening soaking in its snowy charm.
The day was spent exploring Nainital’s treasures, from the serene Naini Lake to the bustling Mall Road. Later, we drove to Mukteshwar, a small hill town offering breathtaking views of snow-covered peaks and apple orchards. The quaint charm and peaceful environment of Mukteshwar provided a perfect escape. Returning to Nainital, we enjoyed a cozy family dinner and shared stories of our adventures.
Our final day began with a relaxed morning in Nainital before heading to Delhi. The journey was bittersweet, as we bid goodbye to the beautiful hills and snowy landscapes. At Hotel Almora, near Delhi Airport, we rested before our flight to Kolkata the next day.
Uttarakhand was an experience of contrasts—spiritual tranquility, thrilling wildlife encounters, and the serenity of snow-capped mountains. Traveling with family made the journey even more special, turning moments into memories that we’ll treasure for a lifetime. From the holy ghats of Haridwar to the snowy vistas of Nainital, this trip was a testament to the beauty and diversity of Uttarakhand.
