Finally, in July 2018, the dream came true as we embarked on an 11-day journey through this breathtaking region. From the serene valleys of Kashmir to the rugged beauty of Ladakh’s high-altitude landscapes, every moment of the trip was an adventure filled with wonder, joy, and unforgettable memories.

This was no ordinary holiday; it was a carefully planned expedition that included flights, scenic road journeys, and stays at picturesque destinations like Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonmarg, Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, and Tso Moriri. We booked a local car rental from Srinagar with a driver who accompanied us throughout, ensuring a smooth and enriching experience on Ladakh’s challenging roads.

Our adventure started with a flight from Kolkata to Srinagar, where the allure of Kashmir’s verdant meadows set the tone for the journey ahead. Over the next 11 days, we traversed majestic mountain passes, explored pristine lakes, marveled at ancient monasteries, and soaked in the tranquility of Ladakh’s surreal landscapes.

For us, this was not just a trip but a once-in-a-lifetime experience that strengthened our family bond and left us in awe of nature’s grandeur. It was an unforgettable chapter in our lives, a journey etched forever in our hearts.

Planning the Trip

Every great journey begins with meticulous planning, and our Ladakh adventure was no exception. Being a family trip, the preparations had to ensure comfort, safety, and enjoyment for everyone involved. Starting months in advance, we carefully mapped out our itinerary, choosing destinations, transportation, and accommodations that would allow us to experience Ladakh's unparalleled beauty without any hiccups.

Choosing the Right Time

We decided to travel in July 2018, a time when Ladakh is at its best. The snow from winter had melted, opening up scenic routes like the Srinagar-Leh highway, while the weather was pleasant and conducive to travel. July also marked the peak tourist season, so we had to be proactive with our bookings to secure the best options.

Travel Arrangements

To make the journey seamless, we booked flights from Kolkata to Srinagar and from Leh back to Kolkata through EaseMyTrip. This allowed us to start our trip in the verdant valleys of Kashmir and end it amidst the stunning high-altitude landscapes of Ladakh.

Knowing that Ladakh’s roads are not for the faint-hearted, we opted to hire a car with a professional driver from a Srinagar-based local rental service. This turned out to be a wise decision, as the driver’s expertise in navigating treacherous mountain roads added to our safety and allowed us to focus on enjoying the views.

Accommodation was another crucial aspect of planning. Since we were traveling to multiple destinations—Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonmarg, Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, and Tso Moriri—we used platforms like Booking.com, MakeMyTrip, and Goibibo to book hotels in advance. This not only ensured we had comfortable stays at each stop but also helped us stick to our budget.

Research and Preparation

We dove into travel blogs, forums, and YouTube videos to learn about Ladakh’s must-visit places, road conditions, altitude sickness precautions, and cultural norms. Armed with this knowledge, we packed essentials like warm clothing, sunscreen, medications, and snacks to make the trip as smooth as possible.

Addressing Challenges

One of the major considerations for a Ladakh trip is the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), which can affect travelers at high altitudes. We consulted a doctor beforehand and carried necessary medications like Diamox. We also planned our itinerary to allow proper acclimatization, spending time in Srinagar and Leh before ascending to higher altitudes like Nubra and Pangong.

As our plane descended, we were greeted by a mesmerizing panorama of lush green valleys and snow-capped mountains, setting the tone for the journey ahead.

The moment we stepped out of the airport, the cool breeze and the sight of towering chinar trees made us forget the hustle of city life. Srinagar’s charm lay in its blend of natural beauty and vibrant culture, evident in the colorful houseboats lining Dal Lake and the bustling markets filled with handcrafted souvenirs.

Dal Lake: A Serene Welcome

No visit to Srinagar is complete without experiencing the tranquility of Dal Lake. That evening, we embarked on a serene Shikara ride, gliding across the calm waters as the sun set behind the mountains. The lake, dotted with floating gardens and vibrant flowers, seemed to cast a magical spell on us. As we soaked in the peaceful ambiance, the distant call to prayer from a nearby mosque added a soulful touch to the experience.

Exploring Mughal Gardens

The next day, we visited Srinagar’s famed Mughal Gardens—Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Chashme Shahi. After leaving Sonmarg, we embarked on a journey through the legendary Zoji La Pass, one of the most challenging yet rewarding routes of the trip. The narrow roads and towering mountains added a sense of adventure to our drive.

Kargil: A Stop Rich in History (1 Night Stay)

We reached Kargil by evening and spent the night in a cozy hotel. This town, steeped in history, gave us a chance to visit the Kargil War Memorial. The experience was profoundly moving as we learned about the bravery of the soldiers who defended the region. The calm and peaceful atmosphere of Kargil, combined with its historical significance, made it an essential stop on our journey.

The Journey to Leh

From Kargil, we continued to Leh, where a 2-night stay awaited us. The drive was filled with iconic stops and breathtaking views.

The Magnetic Hill, known for its gravity-defying phenomenon, fascinated us as our vehicle seemed to move uphill on its own. At the Sangam, the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers, we witnessed the striking contrast in their colors—a sight to behold.

Arriving in Leh after a full day of travel, we were ready to explore its unique charm over the next two days.

The Charm of Leh (2 Nights Stay)

Leh, the cultural and administrative heart of Ladakh, became our home for two nights. This gave us ample time to acclimatize and explore its captivating attractions.

Exploring Leh Town

We spent our first day strolling through Leh’s bustling markets, where Tibetan artifacts, woolen goods, and traditional jewelry tempted us to shop. The aroma of local delicacies wafting through the air made it impossible to resist a hearty meal.

Cultural and Historical Landmarks

During our stay, we visited the Leh Palace, a magnificent 17th-century structure offering panoramic views of the valley. The Shanti Stupa, perched atop a hill, provided a peaceful retreat and a stunning sunset view.

Adventures in Nubra Valley (1 Night Stay)

The journey from Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung La Pass was one of the most thrilling experiences of the trip. At over 18,000 feet, Khardung La is among the world’s highest motorable roads, and pausing here for photos was a must.

Exploring Nubra’s Wonders

Nubra welcomed us with its incredible contrasts: golden sand dunes, lush green fields, and a backdrop of towering mountains. We spent the night at a cozy guesthouse in the valley. A camel ride on the double-humped Bactrian camels at Hunder was a family favorite, while the Diskit Monastery, with its imposing Buddha statue, provided a spiritual and serene experience.

Mesmerizing Pangong Lake (1 Night Stay)

From Nubra, we headed to the legendary Pangong Lake, where we stayed overnight.
