Kashmir, often called "Paradise on Earth," had always been on our travel bucket list. In April 2022, we finally made it happen with a carefully planned 8-day trip, accompanied by our in-laws. Here's a glimpse into our unforgettable journey:
Day 1: Kolkata to Srinagar – A Picturesque Welcome

We flew from Kolkata to Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. Our stay was at Hotel Royal Heritage, perfectly located to begin our exploration. The first stop was Pari Mahal, a historic garden offering panoramic views of Dal Lake. Next, we wandered through the vibrant blooms at the Tulip Garden, followed by the serene Nishat Garden and Shalimar Garden. In the evening, we enjoyed a peaceful shikara ride on Dal Lake, soaking in the tranquility of the mountains reflected in the water.

On Day 3, we set off for Pahalgam, known for its stunning landscapes. We checked into Hotel Pahalgam Retreat and spent the rest of the day exploring the local area. Pahalgam’s serenity and the gurgling Lidder River left us enchanted.

The day was dedicated to discovering Pahalgam’s breathtaking spots. We began with Aru Valley, a charming hamlet surrounded by alpine forests and meadows. The calmness of the valley was the perfect escape, and the kids loved running around in the open spaces.
Next, we headed to Betaab Valley, famously named after a Bollywood movie. The striking contrast of the lush green meadows against the snow-capped mountains was surreal.
We visited Chandanwari, known as the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra. The day left us rejuvenated with the perfect mix of adventure and tranquility.

After a hearty breakfast, we left for Gulmarg, the crown jewel of Kashmir’s winter destinations. Upon arrival, we checked into Hotel Royal Park.
Once we reached the valley, the weather had cleared up, revealing a stunning landscape. The valley was a lush green carpet surrounded by snow-capped mountains, and we decided to explore it on foot despite the morning’s ordeal.

We started the day early with a trip to the famous Gondola Ride, which took us to Apharwat Peak. The cable car journey offered breathtaking views of the snow-covered landscape. However, our adventure took an unexpected turn at the top. As we were admiring the pristine snowy vistas, a sudden snowstorm swept through the area. To make matters worse, the gondola service was halted for maintenance due to the extreme weather. It was a tense situation as we waited anxiously inside the station, hoping for the storm to subside and the gondola service to resume. The howling wind and swirling snow outside added to our unease.
After about an hour, the gondola service resumed, and a crowd quickly formed as everyone scrambled to board. In the chaos, my son lost one of his snow boots while trying to enter the gondola. It was a moment of panic amidst the commotion, but we managed to board safely. The ride back down felt like a collective sigh of relief for everyone on board.
Post lunch, we headed to Sonmarg, aptly named the "Meadow of Gold." We checked into Hotel Divine Inn, nestled amid breathtaking surroundings, and unwound after the adventurous morning.
Sonmarg’s beauty is hard to describe in words. We strolled through the golden meadows and enjoyed the serene atmosphere. Our guide shared fascinating stories about the region, enriching our experience. The crisp mountain air and natural splendor made it one of the most memorable days of our trip.

On our final day in Sonmarg, we visited Zero Point, a high-altitude spot near the Zojila Pass. The snow-clad landscape stretched as far as the eye could see, and the kids had a blast playing in the snow. The journey to Zero Point was an adventure in itself, with winding roads and stunning views.
In the afternoon, we returned to Srinagar for a shopping spree. We explored the vibrant markets, purchasing Kashmiri shawls, dry fruits, and beautiful handicrafts. Back at Hotel Royal Heritage, we spent our final evening reminiscing about the week’s adventures over a delicious Kashmiri meal.
