Smell Gas, Act Fast

Our Solution is a companion app to indoors/outdoors fire alarm systems that detect natural gas leaks.

Upon detection our app will send alerts to authorities and utilities to immediately send someone to the location, to patch the leak. Consumers can download a consumer-facing version of the app to report leaks on their own.

When the gas leak is detected, the mobile companion application will alert residents, authorities, and utilities. This mobile alert-system will help authorities and utility companies act fast on stopping the gas leak before anymore deaths or injuries occur. The application will connect with 311 (or any open data source) for New York City, to track which residences have been checked for potential gas leaks.

Team Members: Zoraida Ingles (CIS395), Adrian Sigal (MAR330), Jiamin Shi (CIS395), Esther Mallen (CIS395), Thet Thant Rain (CIS395) and Zulkiflou Soumailou (MAR330)

Con Edison Gas Awareness

Con Edison can run a campaign to increase awareness of gas safety and the importance of reporting natural gas odors through a text message newsletter. The text messages would contain a prompt with a link to a short video (5 minutes or less) about gas safety. Most people will watch a video as well as retain more information than reading long text messages. Customers can be pushed to sign up by an offer of 20% off their current bill. Additionally, there will be technology to acknowledge that the entire video has been watched. And only once all videos have been watched will customers receive their discount on their next bill.

Awareness and Education

The problem is too much time wasted between Con Edison and the New York community members by the lack of communication and knowledge sharing about how gas odor fades. Gas odor is not always detectable when there are compromised gas connections in the street.

In the 21st century, why is there a lack of communication and knowledge about gas odor between a utility company and the business and household environment in which it operates?

Protector

We understand that most people do not know when to report or how to report a concern. We also understand that as New Yorkers, we are always in a rush and may not have the time to figure out what we should even do.

When presented the opportunity to help reimagine awareness of this issue, we were excited to develop something that would be helpful and easy to use. With our app, you have a plethora of options to choose from. From understanding in terms anyone can grasp, giving words to concerns you may have, a multitude of virtual content, different levels of privacy when reporting, and the ability to report without hassle. Yes, we have thought of it all!

We invite you to afford yourself the opportunity to become well informed in a fun easy way.
