Topics

RACIAL JUSTICE

Students will choose to provide a solution for racial bias within law enforcement, or spotting judicial bias, or navigating complex policies with regard to elections and voting rights.

MISINFORMATION

Students will address misinformation / disinformation as it affects the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, or climate change, or the cellphone and wireless technology 5G conspiracy theories.

CONSUMER SAFETY

For this topic, students will work on a research proposal to inform and enhance Con Edison's public outreach, superintendent training curriculum, and other gas safety programs.

JUDGING CRITERIA

Completeness and transferability

How fully is the idea implemented? Can it achieve an impact in the field? Can it be transferred elsewhere? The judges are looking for an application that could make a difference in dangerous situations and can be used multiple times.

Design and usability

How good are the design, user experience, and ease of use of the solution? How quickly can it be utilized in a community or society? Students need to think about the end-user and their situation – consider the individual’s stress, access to network connectivity, their device’s battery life, etc.

Effectiveness and efficiency

Does the solution address a high-priority area? Does it achieve its goal effectively and efficiently? Can it scale? This should address a problem that has been quantified and then have an impact.

Creativity and innovation

How unique is the approach to solving a long-standing or previously intractable problem? This doesn’t need to be completely original. Think about how students can add insight to an existing solution or take a totally different perspective/view on the problem and create a solution around it.

The Judges

Invited to speak on the career panel, as well as assess student projects, are industry professionals at Google, NYC Tech Talent Pipeline, Glitra, and zyBooks.
