Personas were used in development of the degree to validate the types of learner we were designing for. The personas themselves were validated with a survey of change makers. In a second survey, once the degree was largely developed, respondents would recommend that all personas do the Bachelor of Leadership for Change.
Then we used the personas as crash-test dummies - making sure that the degree would work for them. This included simulated crashes where they got a job mid-degree, changed their minds, lost confidence and so on to check that the degree structure and approach was robust and flexible enough to manage these situations in a learner-centred way. There was substantial change to the programme structure as a result of this exercise.
The personas are intended as characterisations. They should be interpreted as representing learners in non-specific ways - being gender, age, ethnicity (etc) neutral (yes, we know they mostly look young, we borrowed the images from another project).
