Story : Scientific progress relies on the maxim that scientific inquiry knows no bounds: new results and insights are not dependent on the location of the scientists who conducted the work. However, there is no similar guarantee that researchers in disparate locations will have equitable opportunities to participate in science. ...continued

“Aims to provide an education that teaches the veneration of God and understands the true meaning of life”

– Excerpt from Sogang University’s Mission Statement

Beyond the Sogang University imagery of the crest, albatross, and campus, there are two sides to the illustration: research and religion. At the bottom section, there is a child with a scraped knee, visualizing the ultimate goal of both research and religion to help understand the human condition and human suffering. On an individual level, both sides aim to heal and improve, especially for the innocent child and our future generations. Both sides show the physical faces and structures of the two areas: a scientist and a Jesuit priest, a lab and a church.  The image includes some key scientific discoveries made by the Jesuits throughout history: - Moon reflecting off the sea: To signify the discovery of the moon's role in controlling the tides (also to expand the art piece's light/dark imagery) - Microscope: For advances in the field of optics and microscopy (a close-up analysis and exploration)  - Andromeda nebula: One of the first to observe this structure (to put in perspective the grand scale of the universe)- Dove stained glass: To represent how Jesuits came up with theoretical possibility of flight, and wave-like nature of light (also a representation of the Holy Spirit, peace and hope) The idea of language is also explored as the research side contains imagery of the nitrogen bases of DNA, and the Bohr models of the essential elements: nitrogen, carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. With the combination of the priest holding a bible and the Hangul alphabet is written next to him, it reflects the unique original spreading of Catholicism in Korea through the written word rather than missionaries. It also ties into the innate goal of education throughout history. Other scientific areas included are a neuronal network and DNA double helix--both things every human being has. The neuronal network mass simplifies and fades into black for two reasons: The first is to feed into the light/dark imagery of the piece--that research and religion will continue even during dark times. The image of Jeoldusan mountain also ties into this light/dark theme by remembering the sacrifices made to help improve the wellbeing of future generations by Catholic martyrs . The second is supposed to represent the unknown and the many questions research and religion still have and need to explore. The geometric stained glass and the golden ratio sketch are visualizations of mathematics to symbolize the importance of quantitative measurement in science. Both the geometric and dove stained glass are visual allusions to the importance of stained glass's historical role in the church to educate the illiterate of teachings from the Bible, and as a metaphor of this own art piece’s purpose to educate and explain visually the importance of having both research and religion within a society.
